Today, we celebrate the lesser feast day of.
Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1090 – August 20, 1153) was a French abbot, mystic, and a primary builder of the Cistercian monastic order. Renowned for his deep spirituality and eloquent preaching, he was canonized in 1174 and named a Doctor of the Church.
Early Life and Monastic Path
Born in Fontaines-les-Dijon, France, into a noble Burgundy family.Entered the strict monastery of Cîteaux in 1112 alongside his brothers and companions.
Sent out in 1115 to found a new austere house in the Valley of Wormwood, which he named Clairvaux Abbey.
Served as Abbot of Clairvaux for 38 years, expanding the Cistercian network to over 60 monasteries.
Influence and Church Leadership
Advised popes and monarchs, helping heal the papal schism of 1130 by supporting Pope Innocent II.
Promoted the fledgling Knights Templar and helped draft their foundational rule.
Preached the ill-fated Second Crusade across Europe in 1146.
Opposed the rationalist theology of Peter Abelard, leading to his condemnation at the Council of Sens in 1141.
Writings and Legacy
Called Doctor Mellifluus ("Honey-sweet Doctor") for his exceptionally rich and poetic theological style.
Authored extensive letters, treatises on grace and free will, and the famous Sermons on the Song of Songs.
Died at Clairvaux at age 63.

Today, we celebrate the lesser feast day of Saint Maximilian Kolbe.
Saint Maximilian Kolbe (1894–1941) was a Polish Franciscan priest and martyr. He founded the Militia of the Immaculata, built a massive religious publishing center in Poland, and voluntarily gave his life in the Auschwitz concentration camp to save a fellow prisoner. He was canonized in 1982 by Pope John Paul II.
Early Life and Formation
Born Raymund Kolbe on January 8, 1894, in Zduńska Wola, Poland.
Experienced a vision of the Virgin Mary at age ten holding two crowns (white for purity, red for martyrdom) and chose both.
Entered the Conventual Franciscan Order at age 16, taking the religious name Maximilian.
Earned doctorates in philosophy and theology during his studies in Rome, where he was ordained a priest in 1918.
Mission and Media
Founded the Militia of the Immaculata movement in 1917 to promote deep devotion to the Virgin Mary.
Launched the popular Catholic publication Knight of the Immaculata (Rycerz Niepokalanej).
Established Niepokalanów ("City of the Immaculata") near Warsaw, a vast monastery and publishing hub that housed hundreds of friars.
Traveled as a missionary to Asia, establishing similar centers in Japan (Mugenzai no Sono) and India.
Utilized modern technology, including shortwave radio and planned printing advancements, for evangelization.
World War II and Martyrdom
Sheltered thousands of refugees—primarily Jewish people—at Niepokalanów after the German invasion of Poland.
Arrested by the Gestapo in 1941 for his active resistance and assistance to refugees, and transferred to the Auschwitz concentration camp.
Volunteered to take the place of Franciszek Gajowniczek, a condemned family man chosen to die in a starvation bunker after a prisoner escape.
Survived weeks in the bunker without food or water, leading prayers with other prisoners, before being killed with an injection of carbolic acid on August 14, 1941.
Legacy and Patronage
Canonized as a "martyr of charity" by Pope John Paul II on October 10, 1982.
Recognized as the patron saint of families, journalists, political prisoners, amateur radio operators.

Educated at home by her father in mathematics, history, philosophy, and several languages.
Rejected traditional upper-class expectations of marriage to pursue a religious calling to help others.
Trained as a nurse in Germany in 1950 and later managed a women’s hospital in London.
The Crimean War and "The Lady with the Lamp
"Traveled to Scutari (modern-day Turkey) in 1854 with 38 volunteer nurses.
Found soldiers dying from poor sanitation, typhus, and cholera rather than battle wounds.

Saint Clare of Assisi (born July 16, 1194 – died August 11, 1253) was an Italian noblewoman and an early follower of Saint Francis of Assisi.
She founded the Order of Poor Ladies (the Poor Clares), a strict cloistered religious order, and became the first woman in history to write a monastic rule for women.
Early Life
Born Chiara Offreduccio in Assisi, Italy, to a wealthy and noble family.
Refused marriage proposals as a teenager.
Inspired deeply by the preaching of Francis of Assisi.
Fled her family home on Palm Sunday in 1212 to dedicate her life to Christ.
Religious Life and the Poor Clares
Received a rough habit from Francis at the Portiuncula and cut her hair as a sign of renunciation.
Settled at the convent of San Damiano, serving as abbess for roughly 40 years.
Established the "Privilege of Perfect Poverty," refusing property ownership even for the community.
Authored the official Rule of Life, approved by Pope Innocent IV shortly before her death in 1253.
Legacy and Patronage

Today, we celebrate the lesser fest day of Saint Lawrence.
Saint Lawrence (225–258 AD) was a revered Roman deacon and martyr born in Spain. Served under Pope Sixtus II, he managed church riches and helped the poor.
Executed on August 10, 258 AD, by being roasted on a gridiron, he is the patron saint of cooks, the poor, and comedians.
Early Life and Service
Born around December 31, 225 AD, in Hispania (modern Spain).
Met future Pope Sixtus II in Spain and traveled with him to Rome.
Ordained as a deacon by Pope Sixtus II in 257 AD.
Tasked with overseeing church property and giving money, food, and clothing to widows, orphans, and the needy.
The True Treasures of the Church
Arrested during the Christian purge by Roman Emperor Valerian in 258 AD.
Roman officials demanded that Lawrence hand over the wealth and treasures of the church.
Lawrence asked for three days to gather the riches, during which he sold valuable items and distributed the money to the poor.
Brought a crowd of the sick, disabled, poor, and outcast before the prefect, declaring them to be the true treasures of the church.
Martyrdom and Legacy
Condemned to death by being tied over a slow fire on a large iron gridiron.
Famous for his calm and brave spirit during ex*****on, legend says he joked with his torturers, telling them to turn him over because he was done on one side.
Died on August 10, 258 AD, which remains his official feast day.
Honored as the patron saint of cooks, firefighters, deacons, and poor people.
