On our blog today Kevin talks about how Theatretrain students will shape the ideas behind the 100th Theatretrain performance at the Royal Albert Hall in 2023.

“I love the idea that young people can make a performance using their ideas and then present it to the world. It’s not just about the end result (important though that be) it’s also about the
journey of making it work.”

"Anything worth doing is worth doing well and that’s why performing has such a spin-off in the rest of people’s lives. Learning to apply yourself and focusing with others is a powerful learning tool and if you are open-minded, learning is something you never stop doing. You might not stay on a performing arts journey forever but you take what you learn into everything you do.”

Kevin Dowsett

The performing arts have so many talented role models who are men. People who wow the world with their acting, dancing and singing skills. The performing arts are for everyone. The performing arts are for boys, not just girls.

At Theatretrain we have students who are following in the footsteps of great actors such as Tom Hardy and Idris Elba, amazing musical talents such as Stormzy and Drake, and incredible dancers such as Roberto Bolle and Paul Killick.

Some of our wonderful Centre Directors went along to London's Dominion Theatre last week to watch former Theatretrain pupil Sam Bailey in the new production of "Dirty Dancing".

Sam, who attended Theatretrain Colchester for many years is playing the role of Billy Kostecki.

We all wish Sam the best of luck with the rest of the run, and for his future which is looking very bright indeed!

On our blog today Kevin talks about leadership and what makes a great leader.

“I remember singing Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with Sir Colin Davis and he said, “It’s in German but you know this. I want you to put the score down and hurl this at the audience and make their hair stand on end. Come on, you know you can do it”. We could and we did but only after he made us feel we could. It was a blast. This is what I love about real leaders – they are not about themselves. They are about you – the collective you of all the people in the room.”

How to raise a happy child…

Top tip: Allow your child to experience both success and failure.

At Theatretrain, we’ve combined our 30 years’ experience of helping kids find their “Happy Place” with the latest research to give you a few ideas 💡

🎭We all want our kids to have a healthy, happy childhood. We know it will lead to a more successful life. But how do we go about achieving this in today’s world?

🎭It's not just about giving them what they want and instant gratification- in fact, probably the opposite! Happy kids have a skill set that allows them to enjoy long-term happiness in life. They’re able to pass up immediate gratification in an effort to reach their goals.

Allowing your child to experience failure as well as success now will allow them to reach their “Happy Place” in the future.

To have people around you who celebrate your achievements is a powerful thing. To have someone believe in you, no matter where you are on your journey, can make the difference between carrying on and giving up. At Theatretrain we are a family that celebrates and encourages our students to never give up doing what they love. We celebrate those little failures as we know that means there's some great learning to be had, and we celebrate all our students' incredible successes.

Celebrate someone today, and if you know a young person who loves the performing arts, encourage them to join the Theatretrain family.

Theatretrain has been working with young people for nearly 30 years, and it’s easy to forget just how inspiring and forward-thinking Kevin Dowsett’s vision was then and still is today. We’re not like other theatre training companies, we do things differently, and that’s all down to Kevin’s years of experience as a teacher at many prestigious drama schools,
the Head of Acting at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, the President of EDERED and the President of the International Amateur Theatre Association for Great Britain.

If you want to learn from the best, Kevin is an industry leading expert who puts the heart back into the industry and places young people at the centre of everything Theatretrain stands for.

We are a family at Theatretrain and today we’re giving a huge applause of thanks to Kevin. Take a look at his Facebook and Instagram page
