Bethlem Royal Hospital Bowls Club Open Day’s 2025.

FREE LAWN BOWLS TASTER SESSION

COME ALONG AND GIVE BOWLS A GO!

Friday 2nd May 10am - 12pm and 14.00 -16.00; and Saturday 3rd May 10am - 12pm.

These days are for visitors to try the sport of outdoor lawn bowls.

Situated in the Hospital grounds there is ample parking available.

Our experienced members and qualified coaches will be on hand to explain the game.

All the necessary equipment is supplied and you only need to bring flat-soled footwear to be able to try this great sport.

If you have been considering playing bowls, then this is an ideal opportunity to try it out. If you enjoy it, the club offers a further 3 sessions tuition.

Follow the A232 towards West Wickham turning left at Monks Orchard Road. The hospital entrance is on the left.

From the A21

Take the A232 through West Wickham High Street towards Croydon turning right into Monks Orchard Road. The hospital entrance is on the left.

By Rail

The nearest station is Eden Park on the Hayes Line. From Eden Park turn left along Links Way to the junction with Monks Orchard/South Eden Park Road; the hospital entrance is on the right.

By Bus

Routes 194, 356, 358, 119 and 198 service the hospital.

We are very much a mixed club with a good balance of male and female members, couples and singles.

The emphasis is enjoying both the game and the social atmosphere in equal measure.

History of the club

Bethlem Royal Hospital Bowls Club was founded in 1936 as part of the Sports and Social Club for male employees of Bethlem Royal Hospital. A Ladies Section was added in 1970 and over the years the club has opened its doors to friends and local people, both as players and as social members. It is now a private club maintained by the members, men and women having equal membership facilities.

I joined Bethlem in the summer of 1994 and with several other new members we had tuition on Saturday mornings from a couple of the more senior members. It was great fun but as I was still working, I felt it was a game for the “oldies” to spend their retirement days. How wrong I was! I have always enjoyed playing at Bethlem despite taking time out for various operations over the years. It is a fantastic club with a great competitive spirit, a very good atmosphere and excellent social activities. So, after 28 years I will continue to play at Bethlem Royal Hospital Bowls Club.
