Ireland had a fantastic weekend at the British Isles Sumo Championships held in Belfast on January 31st 2026. We fought hard and had many athletes make it to the podium.

Sonny Bell

Fighting out of London at Light-heavyweight and often competing in thel heavyweight and openweight divisions, Sonny is a favourite at Januarys BISC and is sure to bring excellence and excitement to the ring.

He is a five year veteran of British Sumo, Head Coach of Sumo England and , and British Champion. His strength, discipline and competitive mind set was shaped through early competition in both Rugby and Rowing, but it all clicked when he discovered the power, technique and tradition of SUMO!

Whether Its stepping onto the dohyo, guiding others, or promoting sumo across the UK, Sonny is a key figure in the growth of British Sumo. He is committed to helping the sport grow and thrive.

Luke Etherington

Born and bred on the south coast of England and fighting out of , Luke weighs in at 85kg.

With a base in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and a lifelong immersion in alternative sub-cultures, Luke brings raw explosive energy, unpredictable movements and a certain chaos to the dohyo.

Jolene Harwood

Coming from the south east of England and weighing in at 54kg, Jolene found sumo in 2025 through South Coast Sumo and coach Chay Hext.

As a yoga teacher, Jolene has excellent balance, flexibility and focus, which are essential to all forms of wrestling, particularly sumo!

Jolene hopes to convert her physical yoga skills into dohyo success at the 2026 BISC. She is one of many women in the UK and Ireland discovering that sumo is a sport for everyone!
