It was derby day for the Lions today as they travelled across Billingham to face Billingham Town Whites. It was a competitive start with both teams looking to take control. Brilliant passing and moving down both wings allowed for chances to be created as Jude and Archie came close again and again. The Lions held their lines well and dealt with Town when they tried to force their way through.

It wasn’t long before a beautiful through ball from Sam found Jude who took his time and finally smashed one home. Town tried to fight on with a lovely shot of their own but Ben held his own with a stunning save. Town then turned the pressure up and managed to pull one back but in true Lions style they fought on and were kept in it by some crucial saves from Ben.

It was a strong start to the second half with the Lions controlling the pace. Chances were created again and again as Jude and Archie tried to break through time and again. But for several questionable offside calls; the lads could’ve, and should have, been in front. A rare Town break lead to a goal line scramble allowing them to pull away first at 2-1. The Lions tried to force chances towards the end as they desperately, and deservedly, tried to get something from the game.

It was not to be today however as the game finished 2-1; a score not reflective of the quality the Lions showed at times. Insightful through balls and excellent off the ball movement meant the lads really deserved more. Crucial in keeping town at bay today however was Ben, today’s man of the match. Ben displayed some extremely confident goalkeeping which shows the progress he has made recently! Well done Ben and well done to the Lions for their determination and teamwork today!

It’s fantastic to see other sports clubs in our community getting behind our fundraising efforts, and we’re incredibly grateful to Billingham Buccaneers for inviting us along to tomorrow’s home game at The Forum to help raise the profile of our Teesside to Tennessee fundraiser! 🇺🇸⚽

We can’t wait to head to the rink, soak up the atmosphere and, of course, cheer on the Buccaneers! 🏒🙌

See you all at the rink!

This Saturday, Billingham Juniors/Lions U13’s will be joining us at our game against the Coventry NIHL Blaze 🙌

They are raising money for the opportunity of a lifetime: an elite football camp in the United States — and to do this, they are walking the entire distance from Teesside to Tennessee, which is over 6,000 kilometres 🔥

This camp is run by a former Billingham resident, Jon Baker, who left to pursue a dream in football and now leads the programme at Maryville University ⭐

If you can, please join us in helping to make a difference in our community this weekend - there will be a bucket at the game 🎯

The Lions travelled to familiar opposition today in FC Hartlepool. It was a positive start for the lads with Jude pushing on to make the early break. The lads set up well and kept tight lines meaning they dealt with every forward movement Hartlepool made. After a lapse in concentration Hartlepool broke and found their way through. A speculative effort went in and made the Lions have to regroup with a 1-0 deficit.

The Lions pushed on and created chances through both Jude and Alfie despite being up against it. Frustration set in as chances came and went. Long balls became the tactic and Hartlepool soon cottoned on. The first half ended 1-0 down with a tense second half to go yet.

The second half continued in the same vein with poor decision making allowing Hartlepool to look the more likely to score. And score they did with another speculative effort that caught the Lions on the back foot. At 2-0 the game looked cut and dry but the lads pushed on; as is their spirit. In true Lions style they clawed their way back in to it with a clinical effort from Jude to make it 2-1. With the bit between their teeth they fought to break even. Breaks on both wings saw Hartlepool on the back foot allowing Bobby to play Archie in who took his time and smashed the Lions back in to it at 2-2.

Not content with a draw, they fought and fought to kill the game off. An eager Chizzy quickly played Archie in from a long throw who measured the ball beautifully for the Lions to finally take the lead. Not content they quickly reset for Alfie to bag another and push the lead to 4. Hartlepool still pushed on and managed to nick another one back to make for a tense final 5 minutes. And the tension only increased more after a mistake at the back allowed Hartlepool to breeze another home and even things out at the final score of 4-4.

An absolute roller coaster of a game today that could have ended either way. Today’s match was another reminder of the grit and determination that the Lions possess. When a game feels out of reach as a spectator the Lions fight and claw to take something from it. This was evident in today’s player of the match, Archie, who fought tooth and nail for his teammates to get something from the game. A hard fought point with lots of lessons learnt! Well done Lions!
