In a season full of close finishes and narrow defeats, this was the closest of them all, beaten by what really is the finest of margins, when the run chase fell just one run short.

After winning the toss and putting the hosts in to bat against the spectacular backdrop of Hovingham Hall, which has to be one of the most picturesque grounds in Yorkshire, the bowlers made good use of a pitch with a bit of life in it. It was probably the most complete performance of the season in the field with Jamie Blackburn bowling superbly for his 4-37. Andy Kenny also bowled unchanged and took 3-24 from his 10 overs. Bishopthorpe would however later regret the fact that they allowed Hovingham to add 41 for the ninth wicket. But backed up by some good energetic fielding, the target of 154 looked a very gettable target

The run chase started badly. Runs looked easy to come by, but the top four all gave their wickets away cheaply, and Bishopthorpe were looking down the barrel at 78-7. However, Jamie Blackburn (41) and Ben Smith added 70 for the 8th wicket. The pair looked largely untroubled until Gareth Wainwright dismissed first Smith and then Blackburn with fantastic deliveries in successive overs with 8 runs still required. The last pair of Andy Kenny and Harry Lawrence edged towards the target in a nervy finish before Pete Coultard (5-37) bowled Lawrence a rank full toss that the youngster middled, but straight to the midwicket fielder who held the catch to clinch the win for Hovingham.

A yard either side and they would have been the winining runs, but cricket can be a cruel game. The four bonus points do move Bishopthorpe 16 points clear of Tadcaster Magnets who were well thrashed by promotion chasing Stockton & Hopgrove. This means that Bishopthorpe go into next weekends game against New Earswick knowing that if they win, and Magnets fail to beat leaders Sheriff Hutton next weekend, then Division 3 safety will be guaranteed with two games to spare. However, in a season of close finishes, nobody would be surprised if this season does go right to the wire.

Bishopthorpe eased their relegation worries with a hard fought victory over Woodhouse Grange, chasing down 228 with four wickets and four balls to spare, with Scott Clapham hitting a match winning 85 from just 62 balls.

The run chase was built on a 123 run Partnership between Scott Clapham and David Turner (62) after Rob George had got them off to a positive start with a fluent 39. Needing just 28 runs with 51 balls remaining it had looked like Bishopthorpe would comfortably reach their target with room to spare, but lost 4 wickets for just two runs to set up a very nervy finish. Tom Schofield and Sridar Seshan remained in control and Seshan hit the winning runs with four balls to spare in what was his final contribution of what has been a productive season.

Seshan had earlier been the pick of the bowlers, picking up two wickets and keeping the Woodhouse Grange batsmen in check after they had enjoyed an opening stand of 112. Whilst wickets were hard to come by, some tight bowling from Harry Lawrence and Shubhum Karmaker prevented the visitors from setting a much more challenging target.

The win means Bishopthorpe leapfrog Woodhouse Grange into ninth position, but just 12 points clear of Tadcaster Magnets who currently occupy the final relegation place with four games yet to play.

On Saturday Bishopthorpe take on Woodhouse Grange at Ferry Lane (1pm start), with both sides desperate for points to move away from the relegation places.

Bishopthorpe welcome back Rob George at the top of the order, Scott Clapham has overcome a back injury and is fit to play and midweek regular all rounder Shubhum Karmaker also making a rare league appearance. Jamie Blackburn, Tom Schofield and youngster Harry Lawrence will lead the attack with leading wicket taker Brandon Clapham and Sridar Seshan offering slow bowling options.

With the leagues announcement that just two teams would be relegated from Division 3, Saturdays 9-wicket defeat against Yapham was particularly disappointing. A win would have seen us put distance between ourselves and the drop zone and we had identified this fixture as an important game in the battle against relegation. Unfortunately, so had Yapham, who fielded a strong side, with three of their top four and their opening bowler having played most of the season for their first XI in Division 1.

We won the toss, and on reflection it was perhaps a bad toss to win. On a scorching day on a rock hard pitch and a lightening quick outfield it was a 'bat first day'. However, the opening bowlers were able to extract variable bounce and movement early on. The usually reliable David Turner was dropped off his second ball, and bowled by his third. Ben Smith and Scott Clapham followed soon after leaving the home side in trouble at 26-3. Sridhar Seshan (39) and Tom Schofield (40) worked hard to put a target on the board, sharing a partnership of 71, but it was slow going and runs were hard to come by. Jamie Blackburn added an unbeaten 22 but the total of 137-9 from 40 overs looked well below par.

To stand any sort of chance Bishopthorpe were going to have to take early wickets but the Yapham openers both notched half centuries as they shared a century opening stand. Bishopthorpe used 6 bowlers, but none of them were able to put the ball in the right areas consistently enough to find out if there was still some assistance in the pitch that had been so evident during the first innings. Yapham reached their target in just 24 overs and in doing so leapfrogged Bishopthorpe in the table.

Next weekend Woodhouse Grange visit Ferry Lane, and with just ten points separating the four teams battling to avoid relegation, this is set to be another big game, and a win would see Bishopthorpe overtake the visitors and take a big step towards safety.

Bishopthorpe ended their five game losing streak, with victory over local rivals Ovington, in yet another game that went to the wire and was a lot closer than the 22-run margin of victory suggests.

After winning the toss and elected to bat Ben Smith struck 5 fours in his 21 as the home side made a positive start. His opening partner Sridhar Seshan was a lot more watchful and made an invaluable 36 from 79 balls, but it was Sam Davies who pushed the score on striking 64 from 59. With a big total on the cards, Davies' dismissal sparked a spectacular collapse, with Bishopthorpe losing their last 5 wickets for just 17 runs with Ovington captain Benji Busby ending up with remarkable figures of 6-17 from 4.5 overs.

To defend a target of 184 Bishopthorpe were going to have to bowl and field well. Tom Schofield took the new ball, although his first over went for 7 runs and despite struggling with an injury, he ended up bowling unchanged for 10-4-23-2. He received good support from Liam Corbally, before Brandon Clapham turned the screw, taking 3-35 in the middle overs.

At 78-6 the game appeared to be slipping away from Ovington, but a 64-run partnership between Dom Everard (40) and Owen Price (39) left them needing just 29 runs from the final 24 balls, but Andy Kenny returned and wrapped up the win, finishing with an impressive 4-37.

The win completes a league and cup treble over Ovington, who remain just one place ahead of Bishopthorpe in a very tight looking league table. With the bottom four set to be relegated, Bish sit fourth from bottom, but the win keeps them within touching distance of those ahead of them. Next week sees a trip to struggling bottom club Easingwold, and the chance to move out of the relegation zone places for the first time this season.

Bishopthorpe slumped to their fifth consecutive defeat in all competitions, but once again the result was in the balance until the final ball as yet another match went to the wire.

After failing to defend totals on two occasions last weekend, after winning a rare toss, Bishopthorpe decided they would put the opposition in to bat, and chase whatever total set.

This meant giving up the best of the conditions but the bowlers stuck to their task well with Brandon Clapham and the returning Tom Schofield keeping things tight early on. The pressure paid off with a run out with a direct hit from Angus Kenny from 40 yards. Andy Kenny was the pick of the bowlers who took 2-27 from his 10 over spell, bowling in tandem with Tom Wilson Close who conceded just 23 runs from his 7 overs of spin. However, with wickets in hand the Sheriff Hutton skipper Dan Tuite finished 61no and Jake Popplewell finished unbeaten on 47, pushing the target that promised being well below par up above 200.

The reply couldn't have got off to a worse start with the top four all back in the hutch with only 34 runs on the board. Prathamesh Thakur hit a breezy 17 and Andy Kenny 23, but there was little sign that Bishophorpe could mount a serious challenge. That was before Matt Coulson, making a rare league appearance, strode to the crease. Coulson set about the Bridge attack with a display of brutal hitting, and with support from Matt Turner, and then Tom Wilson Close (21no) he powered past the first target, picking up some much needed bonus points. When Coulson was finally dismissed for 72, his heroics had left the home side with a realistic chance of chasing down the target. As Close and Brandon Clapham edged towards the total, it was Sheriff Hutton's Dan Tuite who sealed the win for the visitors, taking his fifth wicket to go with his half century, sealing victory for his side by just 8 runs.

Bishopthorpe are at Ferry Lane again next Saturday as they host local rivals Ovington, seeking a much needed win in the fight against relegation.

Chris Norton's superb hundred was not enough to prevent defeat at Bolton Percy as the home side chased down the target of 200 with 3 wickets and two overs to spare.

After being put into bat on a tricky looking wicket Norton batted throughout the entire innings, finally dismissed from the final ball, hitting 125 from 125 balls in an innings that included 18 fours and a six. This was the first time this season that Bishopthorpe had not been bowled out inside the 40 overs, and Nortons innings papered over the cracks of another sub standard batting performance, scoring 62.% of the 200 run total.

In contrast, most of the Bolton Percy batsmen made contributions as despite chipping away and taking wickets, the Bishopthorpe bowlers were never able to get on top as the home side kept up with the required rate. Andy Kenny (2-33), Harry Lawrence and Sridar Seshan all took two wickets apiece,. and Prathamesh Thakur took what is surely the catch of the season to keep Bishopthorpe's hopes alive, but the Bolton Percy skipper Darren Shaw (39no) kept his nerve to steer his team safely home with 15 balls to spare.

Sunday
Leeds based Whitkirk were the visitors for the cup quarter final, and this T20 match followed a very similar pattern to the league game the day before.

Batting first Bishopthorpe never really got going and didn't take full advantage of an absolute road of a track and a lightning quick outfield at Ferry Lane. In form Chris Norton top scored with 34 from 38 balls, and Shubhum Karmaker added 28 from 31. James Mackie, playing his first game for 4 year added some late impetus striking a quick fire 27, but the total of 131 felt below par.

The feeling was that in order to win we would have to bowl the visitors out, and Mackie picked up a wicket in his miserly opening spell that went for just 13 runs from his four overs. Toby Brown also picked up a couple of wickets as the Whitkirk were in a little trouble at 34-3, before a 60 run partnership took them to the brink of victory. Turning to spin, Tom Close and Sridar Seshan both picked up two wickets apiece, with Chris Norton taking four catches in the outfield. However two sixes in two balls from Elliot Doolan completed the victory for Whitkirk with 9 balls to and 2 wickets to spare.

Two big games coming up this weekend. On Saturday we travel to local rivals Bolton Percy. The hosts are sitting in third place in the league and chasing promotion, whilst Bishopthorpe are in need of a win to ease relegation worries.

On Sunday we are in T20 mode as we welcome Whitkirk to Ferry Lane for the quarter finals of the Wilberfoss Cup.

Ten man Bishopthorpe put in a spirited performance against York at Ferry Lane on Saturday, but despite a fine 80 from David Turner and a superb bowling performance from three members of the Kenny family the visitors ultimately proved too strong for the depleted home team.

Missing several key players, Bishopthorpe only managed to field a side by fielding Andy Kenny's two sons, who both picked up their first wickets in senior cricket, with the elder of the two finishing with 3-28. The innings was built around a solid unbeaten 70 from skipper Matt Huffer, with the top seven batsmen all making starts. Bishopthorpe kept chipping away and picking up wickets at regular intervals, but York looked set for a score approaching 300 until the Kenny's combined to take the last 4 wickets for just six runs. Matthew Turner was outstanding in the field, taking two catches on an afternoon where the ball seemed to follow him everywhere he went.

For Bishopthorpe to have a chance of getting close to the York total, David Turner needed to make a significant contribution, and he batted beautifully for his 80 which came from 89 balls and included 10 fours. After the loss of a couple of early wickets Turner put on 91 with skipper, Ben Smith (44) with the two of them scoring at 7 runs per over and keeping up with the required rate. After Smith was out the required run rate began to rise and the best Bishopthorpe could hope for was to secure a couple of bonus points, which Sridhar Seshan (18) secured shortly after Turner had holed out to a fielder on the boundary.

It was a commendable effort from the team, with everyone making a valuable contribution, and the York side left knowing they had been in a game. It's another busy weekend of cricket next week as Bishopthorpe travel to local rivals Bolton Percy on Saturday, before hosting Leeds based Whitkirk in the Wilberfoss T20 Cup quarter final at Ferry Lane on Sunday afternoon.
