Today is Time to Talk Day, it is the nations biggest Mental Health Conversation.
As my role as a Personal Trainer, I often find clients use our sessions not only for fitness & training but also an opportunity to talk & share their problems with me.
Below is a story about one my clients who has had a difficult time following an accident.
The gym has become a safe place for him, it’s a reason to get up & go each day but also the chance to speak & be heard without judgement.

Please read Dave Wanmer story below -
As I'm sat here listening to the kids laughing & playing in the opposite room, I can feel the darkness creeping in. I hate myself more for not enjoying my time with them.
I was never like this, I was a happy go lucky guy. Then I had an accident that caused a serious concussion. This left me in a depression & anxiety filled husk.
I hate the Headaches that make me think ramming a spike through my ears would be less painful. I hate the sensitivity to sound, that keeps me away from my kids & forces me to search for a quiet room. I hate the memory loss that stops me talking to my family for fear or repeating myself. I hate forgetting my words & having to stop talking mid sentence because I've forgot the next word.
For months & months I had sat infornt of the xbox, only eating or drinking when my wife or kids brought me food or drink. I believe that without them I wouldn’t be here. I could never thank them enough to the degree that they deserve.
All this I deal with on a daily basis. Somedays are easier than others.
I have questioned why I carry on like this & it's the simple things like receiving the warmest of hugs from someone who's just happy to see you. Exerting energy at the gym is a huge relief to me, my frustrations are eased by the workouts & for a while afterwards I feel lighter.
I watched a YouTube video on a guy that tried to commit su***de by jumping off a bridge & his words, that will forever haunt me were "as soon as I let go, I regretted it".
These words are what keep me going.
All I can ever ask from anyone, is understanding. Understanding the fact that just because you can't see that something is broken, doesn't mean that it's not there.

Becci had always classed herself as ‘big’ weighing just over 25.5 stone at her heaviest. She had tried every fad diet over the years to try & loose weight but with limited success.
It was after having her 2 children that really pushed Becci to want to improve her health & fitness to allow her to be more mobile & physically active whilst also setting a better example for her children.

With this change in mindset she was keen to explore the benefits of exercise rather than the sole focus be on diet alone.

Becci began to monitor what she was eating & increased her physical activity. Her goal was to seek help & gain knowledge on how to help with toning, strength & endurance.

Becci has worked hard & has been extremely disciplined in her commitment to be more fit for her family. This in turn has developed into a passion/hobby & encouraged a more active way of life for all the family.

Becci’s dedication has seen an incredible reduction in her weight by nearly 15 stone!!

Like most journeys, this hasn’t all been success. There have been set backs. Becci fell into one of the common traps of needing to see continual results & became confused by the ‘noise’ advertised by ‘experts’ on eating, Health & fitness etc finding herself plateauing & not seeing results.
Some ‘experts’ would promote eating reduced calories over a sustained period of time which then made it a struggle for becci to keep up with the levels of activity she wanted to do.
We are now embarking on a change for the better, with an improved attitude towards eating & fuelling her body for the performances she wants to achieve. It is all about trusting the process & understanding the need to change to be able to sustain this long term.
A week in to eating up to an extra 500cals a day she is 1lb down, but more importantly feeling more rewarded for her efforts with higher energy levels.

Becci is one of my most determined & head strong Clients. There is never a workout or exercise that she complains or resists. Her strength is phenomenal, she makes me a better instructor by challenging me to come up with new & more difficult sessions each & every week.
