Ankle Dorsiflexion video

Firstly sorry for the boring voice, I’m still learning how to create educational videos for you 🙈

How do we test to see if lack of ankle mobility is affecting our squat?

Start by raising the ankle and standing on some plates. Check whether this allows us to gain a more optimum squat.

If this helps improve the squat pattern, it’s likely there is reduced ankle flexion.

Once we are happy that ankle mobility is the issue, we release the muscle of the calves by foam rolling them. We can then stretch them by using the technique used in the video.

Re-assess your ankle range of movement and repeat if you’re unable to reach the wall comfortably.

The first squat (left picture) shows the ideal movement and positions. Keeping the torso and shins parallel with the tops of the thighs at 90 degrees. This allows for a much deeper (functional) squat.

The second squat (right pictures) highlights the torso falling forward, less depth and stress on the lower back.

The reality is…I’M LUCKY!!
