Not everyday you meet royalty!👑

On Tuesday I attended a royal visit from HRH Princess Anne at Margaret Haes Riding Centre. After completing the BHS Coaching 4 All qualification during the summer, I was presented my award by Princess Anne, who is the Vice Patron of the BHS and an Olympic Event rider!

Such an honour!❤️

Miss Eve’s dressage debut🎀

For background, I bought Eve last year when Jimmy needed to do a bit less. I already knew her and had been riding her when the opportunity to buy her came up. I didn’t really have any plans or expectations for her, other than to continue her schooling and see what happens.

Wednesday evening we headed to a local venue for Eve’s first dressage competition. I wanted to make sure we had enough tools in our kit before doing a test, and she’s been going so well at home so I thought now is the time!

She behaved impeccably and tried her absolute best for 63.8%🤍

Eve produced some really nice work in the walk and trot, and some good moments in the canter. When you’re a big girl cantering in a big open field is obviously so much easier than a 20x40m arena! So more work to balance the canter is in our next steps. Think we might try a long arena test in the future, as the hardest part was keeping her inside the white boards (which we did manage to do)🤣

Overall I’m so pleased with Eve and already looking for our next pony party!🩷🎀

On the 13th July 2016, a 7-year-old green, nervous, and slightly skinny coloured horse arrived in my stable.
Over the last 10 years, Jimmy has made all my dreams come true. He truly is my horse of a lifetime and I’m so grateful to him for everything he has given to me and shaped me into who I am today.
Now he is 17 and not as young as he used to be, but owes me nothing.
Thank you Jim, here’s to many more years together❤️

!!REMINDER!!

🌡️ HOT WEATHER & HORSE WELFARE 🌡️
As temperatures rise, it’s important to understand how heat affects horses and what riders can do to reduce the risk of Exertional Heat Illness (EHI).

Research shows horses perform best in temperatures between 5–25°C — and even acclimatised horses cannot perform as well in hot weather as they can in cooler conditions.

In the heat, horses:
• Tire more quickly
• Recover more slowly
• Are more likely to make mistakes
• Become hotter during exercise
• Face increased risk of heat illness, colic and laminitis

⏱️ Horses need time to acclimatise
Most horses need around 10–14 days of exercising in hot conditions to acclimatise effectively.
If the weather suddenly becomes hot, horses will NOT be acclimatised — and a few days of riding in the hottest part of the day can actually make things worse.

If you don’t have time to acclimatise your horse:
• Reduce workload and intensity
• Shorten warm ups
• Train during cooler parts of the day
• Allow longer recovery periods
• Prioritise cooling before and after exercise
• Consider dropping down a class if needed

🐴 Horses at greater risk of overheating include:
• Unfit or overweight horses
• Large or heavy breeds
• Very young or older horses
• Horses with dark/heavy coats
• Horses with health conditions such as asthma or PPID
• Horses carrying heavier rider/tack combinations

🚿 The BEST way to cool a hot horse?

Research strongly supports:
✅ Continuous cold water application
✅ Cooling the entire body
✅ Using fans and airflow
❌ NOT scraping water off

A wet horse cools faster than a dry horse — and scraping slows the cooling process.

💧 Top cooling tips:
• Apply plenty of cold water all over the horse
• Keep water flowing continuously
• Use shade and airflow where possible
• Offer free access to water before, during and after exercise

🚨 Signs a horse may be dangerously hot:
• Heavy or rapid breathing
• Excessive sweating
• Flared nostrils
• Muscle spasms
• Lethargy or distress
• Unsteadiness

If concerned, start cooling IMMEDIATELY and seek veterinary advice if the horse is not improving quickly.
