Couples Who Train Together – Part 2: Connie & Alex

Following on from Hollie & Andy, we’d like to introduce the second couple in our Couples Who Train Together series, Connie & Alex.

Like many of the nearly 20 couples who train at Scott’s Personal Training, Connie and Alex enjoy training at the same time whilst still following their own personalised programmes based on their individual goals and needs.

Here’s what Connie had to say about their experience of training as a couple…

“I started training with Casey first and, after seeing how much I enjoyed it, Alex decided to join me a few months later. Having never really been into the gym before, we’re now doing our sessions together.

We both love keeping fit, but in our own different ways. Alex enjoys cycling, while I’m much more into weights and dance. With Alex’s shift work, we don’t always get to spend much time together during the week, so having something in the diary that’s just ours is something we really value.

We have separate programmes, but we’ve always been competitive with each other. Seeing one of us increase their weights is the perfect motivation for the other to push a little harder too!

It’s become the perfect way to spend time together, and work on ourselves at the same time!”

Been making some big progress with my knees recently. Despite meniscus tears, cartilage degeneration and arthritis, I’m now back training jump spinning hook kicks and step-over hook kicks! 🥋💪🏻

Couples Who Train Together – Part 1: Hollie & Andy

Over the next few weeks, we’re going to be introducing you to some of the nearly 20 couples who train at Scott’s Personal Training.

Although many people assume couples train together, that’s not always the case. Every client has their own coach and follows a personalised programme based on their individual goals. Hollie trains with Scott, while Andy trains with Mustafa, allowing each of them to receive coaching tailored specifically to them whilst still enjoying the journey together.

To kick off the series, we’d like to introduce Hollie and Andy. Hollie has been training with Scott multiple times a week for over 13 years, while Andy has also been training multiple times a week since the gym first opened eight years ago.

Here’s what Hollie had to say about training as a couple…

“We have a shared passion for health and fitness - for life and for sport - so it’s great to be able to pursue that passion together. While we have separate coaches so that we can focus on our individual goals and needs, we regularly train at the same time. This is a great motivator, giving us another person to be accountable to, as well as being a lot of fun. It’s nice to spend our training sessions together - especially as we train in the evening, so we get to see each other and catch up after the working day. The journey home from the gym is then a great opportunity to check in on how our sessions went and the progress we’re making.”

I should have been doing my black belt grading today but events over the last few weeks meant I wasn’t able to polish up my freeforms.

Sometimes life gets in the way but the goal doesn’t change and neither does my determination.

Not long now, hopefully by November. 🥋

A huge congratulations to Wendy for successfully completing her charity row across the Channel!

Over the past few months, Wendy has worked with Coach Harry to prepare for the demands of this challenge. Our focus wasn’t just on building strength and fitness, but on developing the physical resilience required to handle long hours of rowing, maintain performance under fatigue, and reduce the risk of injury throughout the journey.

Training included:
✅ Building full-body strength to improve rowing power and efficiency
✅ Developing muscular endurance to cope with prolonged periods on the water
✅ Improving core strength to support effective force transfer with every stroke
✅ Managing training load and recovery to ensure consistent progress leading into the event
✅ Work on the ergometer (rowing machine) to build energy system capacity

An amazing accomplishment for an even greater cause. Congratulations again, Wendy - you should be incredibly proud of what you’ve achieved. 🚣‍♀️🌊

🔑 Yesterday marked 8 years since I picked up the keys to my gym.

Looking back at these photos, I realise how easy it is to forget how far I’ve come.

An empty shell. No experience running a proper business. No guarantees. Just a vision and a determination to build something special.

Before opening my own facility, I had already spent 15 years building a successful personal training business. I loved coaching and had become very good at it.

Getting my own gym was a completely different challenge. It took me 9 years of trying to secure a lease!

When I picked up these keys, I quickly realised that being a good coach wasn’t enough anymore. Suddenly I had to become a businessman, marketer, salesperson, accountant, recruiter, manager, problem solver and a jack of all trades all at the same time.

There was no blueprint. Most of what I’ve learned has come from mistakes, setbacks and figuring things out the hard way. Sometimes the only way to discover what’s right is to experience what’s wrong first.

Over the last 8 years we’ve transformed this empty building into something I’m incredibly proud of.

We’ve survived Covid, navigated rising costs and economic uncertainty and gone from a business built around me as a self-employed coach, to a team of self-employed coaches and eventually to a business with a full-time employed coaching team.

We’ve helped hundreds of people improve their health, fitness and confidence.

Despite it all, we’re still here - stronger, wiser and continuing to improve.

Thank you to every client, coach and everyone who has supported us over the last 8 years.

A special thank you to my personal PT clients who are still training with me after 10 - 20 years. Your loyalty, trust and support have helped me in more ways than you’ll ever know. I genuinely wouldn’t have been able to do this without you.

This gym wouldn’t exist without you all.

If you’re currently working towards a goal that feels impossible, keep going. Don’t let doubt and fear get in the way of your dreams.

The setbacks, failures and lessons are often part of the process of building your own blueprint.

Never give up on your dreams.

Scott 😊💪🏻
