Arm Bar Escapes & Continuations
with Dr Richard Catterick.
The arm bar is one of the most common submissions in Jiu-Jitsu and combat sports and also one of the most misunderstood once things start to go wrong.
In this seminar, Dr Richard Catterick will break down high-percentage arm bar counters and, more importantly, how to continue attacking when the first finish fails.
This session is about problem-solving, not just technique.
What you’ll learn:
> Proven arm bar defensive reactions (before, during, and late-stage)
> How to maintain control when your opponent starts escaping
> Continuation chains into other submissions and how to get the arm bar when your opponent defends
> Common mistakes that cause people to lose the arm bar
How to apply these concepts from:
>Guard
>Mount
Who this seminar is for:
> White belts / Junior grades wanting reliable fundamentals
> Seniors looking to deepen there understanding
Instructors wanting better teaching frameworks for arm bar systems
Why attend?
>Arm bars don’t fail because the technique is wrong they fail because control, timing, and transitions are missing.
>This seminar gives you a system, not just a move.
Expect:
Clear explanations
Practical detail
High-percentage solutions you can apply immediately
Train smarter. Finish more. Escape with confidence.

During December we had 3 students grade to Black Belt and 2 students grade to orange belt within the club, in addition to a record number of students grading in the Style.
This was followed by a fantastic Christmas social where we had delicious food at a Mexican restaurant.
At the final session of 2025 the club surprised sensei Chambers with a wonderful gift of a pair of sai and a memory book tracking 20+ years of training, as a celebration of achieving 4th dan earlier this year.
Fantastic end to 2025. See you in 2026!

Sensational weekend of jitsu in Exeter starting with an awesome seminar taught by sensei Andy Walker (6th dan) of Poole Ju-jitsu Club. It was rewarding to learn from such an experienced instructor and all of our attendees really enjoyed the detail and variety of techniques taught.
Additionally sensei Walker sat the panel along with sensei Rich Catterick for the adjudication of sensei Luke Chambers grading, who successfully obtained the grade of 4th degree black belt. Congratulations on achieving this fantastic milestone.
See you back on the mat next week :)
