Severn AC at the Stroud Beer Race 🍻 🌞

The Stroud Beer Race, hosted by Stroud and District AC, took place on Wednesday 28th May in the middle of the current heatwave, providing extremely tough running conditions for all involved.

Held on Minchinhampton Common, the race featured three demanding laps, two big climbs and blazing sunshine throughout, making it a real test of endurance.

Severn AC produced an excellent set of results, led by Archie Fox, who stormed to victory in an outstanding winning time of 44:37. Alice Tredgett was the club’s first lady home, finishing strongly in 46:45.

Adam Hannis was also running strongly alongside Alice for much of the race but the brutal conditions took their toll late on. Suffering with heat exhaustion, Adam collapsed with just 200 metres remaining before bravely recovering to finish in 51:43.

Particularly notable was Ollie Hancock’s run of 57:10, coming just three days after completing the Edinburgh Marathon, showing remarkable resilience and determination to race again so soon after such a huge effort.

Other Severn AC runners also put in determined efforts in the challenging heat, with Christopher Nicholls finishing in 51:19, Richard Boseley close behind in 51:46, Matthew Harris recording 52:31, David Clarke finishing in 53:20, Tony Evans in 59:42, Ross Bridges in 1:00:36, and Anna Jones completing the tough course in 1:05:18.

Severn AC’s marathon season continued this weekend, with members competing in major events in both South Africa and Scotland.

Severn AC Chair, Dan Nurse, travelled to South Africa to compete in the iconic Cape Town Marathon. Dan has been training tirelessly alongside fellow club members in recent months, putting in the hard work during track sessions and long Sunday runs in preparation for the event.

The tough conditions made for a challenging race, with high temperatures and intense humidity throughout the course. Reflecting on the experience, Nurse said:

“Humidity kicked in as soon as the sun came out and hit 96%, and it also got very warm. I hit 20 miles exactly on plan and the same time as Fission 20, but I knew if I tried to maintain that pace it would’ve been a car crash. You go past the finish line with five miles left, the last 5k felt like an eternity and I definitely had to hang on.”

Despite the demanding conditions, Dan produced an outstanding performance to cross the line in a superb time of 2:54:33.

Meanwhile, over in Scotland, Ollie Hancock completed his fifth marathon at the Edinburgh Marathon on what proved to be an extremely hot day for runners.

After only deciding to enter the race three weeks beforehand, Ollie delivered a fantastic performance to break the four hour barrier, finishing in an impressive 3:59:27.

Speaking after the race, Hancock said:

“Wouldn’t have been able to get that without joining Severn! With the training, racing and everyone’s encouragement I got there! I’m feeling very grateful and happy that I joined now! Got to aim for 3:30 now!!”

Two brilliant marathon performances and another brilliant weekend for Severn AC as members continue to achieve incredible results throughout the marathon season.
