Another day in the office
Meeting at UKHSA followed by a meeting with Sir Chris Whitty and Minister Hardy at DEFRA. Reminding them that their decisions affect people.
National Engineering Policy Centre:
Testing the waters
Priorities for mitigating health risks from wastewater pollution. May 2024. Sir Chris wrote in the forward.
Managing the threat of cholera, typhoid, and many other water-borne diarrhoeal diseases was central to the birth of scientific public health in the UK and has remained central to it since. The remarkable feats of engineering which separated human faeces from water we come into contact with, and in particular from contaminated drinking water, broke the chain of transmission of major faecal-oral diseases which were previously a major cause of mortality in children and adults. It was one of the greatest public health triumphs of the last 200 years, responsible for saving millions of lives globally. The principal reason for the existence of the sewage system is to protect public health.
Sir Chris was firm, but we agreed upon the basic principle that sewage systems should protect people, not harm them. My hope is that he is a man of his word, and he will bring an end to the government putting profit above public health.

Enough is enough.
How much hurt? How much pain? How much anger?
History repeating itself over and over. With our children paying the price of incompetence, ignorance, and what is most difficult to comprehend or accept ... greed. The true price of privatisation. Margaret Thatcher's true legacy... profits before people... no matter the cost.
Anne Moore's piece in todays was very difficult for me to read. Swallowing the tears of grief never gets any easier. Especially when they are gathered up in righteous outrage. But I thank her. Raising awareness coming up to the holiday season is paramount. I thank her for telling our stories, bringing our children out of the darkness and into the light. They must not be forgotten. Our children's legacy will be CHANGE. Our children's legacy will be making our water safe again.
In Margaret Thatcher's own words

Early session in the gym this morning.
Two guys approached me. They'd watched Dirty Business. They'd cried, were angry, and then got very angry and were left with no doubt that the privatisation of the water industry is wrong.
They praised the programme, Suzanne and I, and were horrified by what happened to Heather and thanked me for telling her Heather's story. This wasn't an easy conversation as I was sad today. The last 2 weeks have been hard.
Grief is a funny thing. It never leaves you but always surfaces whenever you aren't looking or least suspect it. As brilliantly demonstrated in the scene in the highstreet. I ran so hard because I truly believed Heather was there.
For years, I believed Heather had been forgotten. There had been no learning, and attitudes hadn't changed. People in power that could make change weren't bothered by the death of my daughter. May be deep down it is this injustice that broke Mark in the end.
Heather shouldn't have died, and no one since should be getting ill. Lessons should have been learnt, and they weren't. Are they prepared to risk another outbreak caused by dirty water...it seems they are. Are they so arrogant that they really believe people are going to continue to believe their dog pooh hypothesis that they constantly churn out!
So, no matter how painful this gets. Grief can come and go like the tides of the sea....

My right to reply!
At the end of the article the water company said
‘The bathing water at Dawlish Warren was tested as part of the investigation at the time by Environmental Health and samples were clear of E.coli’
Firstly, there were samples taken as part of the investigation but only weeks after Heather became ill. The environmental agency focused on what she had eaten and where she had eaten – they assumed she had ingested E.coli from food. It was only after they drew a blank with the food that they started to look at the environment. If E.coli 0157 had been in the environment the chances of finding it, after the length of time it took to investigate food, were going to be very low. But bear this in mind too. I was told be an leading expert in Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome that it only takes a tiny amount of the bacteria (enough to fit on a pin head) to kill someone. So, I’ll leave you to make your own conclusions about that, but can just random sampling be enough to ensure the safety of the public… NO! This pathogen is extremely dangerous.
Secondly, there was E. coli found in the environment, just not the strain that killed Heather. It was found in the shellfish.
But that makes it ok? Again, I’ll leave you to make your mind up about that too. It seems that the water companies think it’s ok that your children are swimming in polluted water. Now the water companies may argue that this is from agricultural runoff as E.coli lives in the gut of cattle. That is true but by dumping sewage into our water they are raising our risk to coming into contact with dangerous bacteria.
Will it take another Heather to make this stop.

Another Joolism fundraising event!!!
We have been raising money for Kidney Research UK
What an amazing morning with an amazing bunch of people. As a few of the Joolism Crew are preparing for a .dozen race in August, i decided we'd hit the Deadly Dozen labours in our event. The ladies were up for giving them a go, and despite a bit of nervousness and anxiety, they smashed it!
