One of the best things you can do for your body costs absolutely nothing.

Walking.

It doesnโ€™t look particularly impressive on Instagram.

Thereโ€™s no heavy dumbbell.
No sweaty workout selfie.
No complicated programme.

But it shouldnโ€™t be underestimated!

For women in midlife, especially during perimenopause and menopause, simple movement can be incredibly valuable.

A walk can help you:

๐Ÿ’œ Move your body without adding another layer of stress
๐Ÿ’œ Support your cardiovascular health
๐Ÿ’œ Clear your head when life feels overwhelming
๐Ÿ’œ Boost your mood
๐Ÿ’œ Get some fresh air and daylight
๐Ÿ’œ Stay active on days when a hard workout just isnโ€™t happening

And sometimes thatโ€™s exactly what you need.

Weโ€™re often told that if exercise isnโ€™t intense enough to leave us exhausted, it isnโ€™t โ€œworkingโ€.

I disagree.

There is a huge difference between moving your body to support it and exercising because you feel you need to burn off food, calories or guilt.

Some days your body might be ready for strength training.

Some days it might want a challenging workout.

And some days?

A walk might be the smartest choice you can make.

Thatโ€™s not doing nothing.
Thatโ€™s learning to work WITH your body. ๐Ÿ’œ

So if youโ€™re feeling tired, stressed or overwhelmed this week, donโ€™t automatically assume you need to push harder.

Put your trainers on.
Go for a walk.
Even 10โ€“20 minutes is a start.

You donโ€™t need to wait for the perfect routine, the perfect weather or an hour of free time.

Just start where you are.

๐Ÿ‘‡ How many walks have you done this week?

And if the answer is โ€œnot manyโ€, maybe today is the perfect day for your first one. ๐Ÿ’œ

Feeling puffy doesn't mean you've gained fat. ๐Ÿ’œ

If your jeans suddenly feel tighter, your stomach feels swollen, or you look in the mirror and think, โ€œWhere has THAT come from?โ€ in the days before your periodโ€ฆ you're definitely not alone.

Hormonal changes throughout your cycle can affect your digestion and fluid balance.

As oestrogen and progesterone fluctuate, your body may temporarily retain more water. Hormonal changes can also influence gut movement, which may leave you feeling fuller, slower or more bloated.

And if you're also experiencing PMS, changes in appetite, cravings, stress or disrupted sleep can add to the discomfort.

This is also true throughout perimenopause and menopause!

The important bit?

A few days of bloating does NOT mean you've suddenly gained body fat.

So rather than restricting your food or punishing yourself with extra cardio, try:

๐Ÿ’ง Stay hydrated: drinking enough water can actually support healthy fluid balance.
๐Ÿฅ— Keep meals regular: skipping meals can make cravings and digestive discomfort harder to manage.
๐ŸŒพ Prioritise fibre: fruit, vegetables, oats, seeds and wholegrains can support digestion.
๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ Keep moving: gentle walking and regular movement can help you feel less sluggish.
๐Ÿง‚ Be mindful of very salty foods if you notice they make your bloating worse.
๐Ÿ˜ด Prioritise sleep and recovery: your body is already dealing with hormonal fluctuations, so you don't need to add more stress.

And perhaps most importantlyโ€ฆ

Don't judge your progress by how your body looks or feels on one particular day of your cycle.

Your body is not failing you.
It's changing.

Track your symptoms, energy and cycle to get ahead of how your body changes each month.
Learning to understand those changes, rather than fighting them, can make a huge difference to how you train, eat and feel.

๐Ÿ’œ Is bloating one of your biggest symptoms before your period? Tell me in the comments.
And if you want to learn hoe to work more with your body, not against it, Comment or DM "MY BODY" and let's start that conversation today!

If you're only tracking calories, you're missing a BIG piece of the puzzle. ๐Ÿ‘€

Especially during perimenopause and menopause, what you eat matters, not just how much.

Protein becomes increasingly important as we get older because it supports several things your body needs to stay strong, healthy and resilient.

๐Ÿ’ช MUSCLE
We naturally become more prone to losing muscle as we age. Strength training + enough protein can help support and preserve lean muscle.

๐Ÿฅ— FULLNESS
Protein is more satisfying than many lower-protein foods, which can help you feel fuller for longer and make constant snacking less tempting.

๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ RECOVERY
Your muscles need protein to repair and rebuild after exercise. If you're putting the work in at the gym but not fuelling your body properly, you're making recovery harder than it needs to be.

๐Ÿฆด HEALTHY AGEING
Maintaining muscle isn't just about how your body looks. It's about strength, mobility, balance, independence and being able to keep doing the things you love.

And here's the bit I want you to remember:

You don't need to live on chicken and protein shakes.
Think about adding a protein source to each meal:

๐Ÿ“ Greek yoghurt + berries + seeds
๐Ÿฅ— Lentils + quinoa + roasted vegetables
๐ŸŒฏ Tofu or beans + salad + wholegrain wrap
๐ŸŸ Salmon or tuna + potatoes + vegetables
๐Ÿฅœ Nut butter + yoghurt + fruit
๐Ÿฅฃ Protein oats with seeds and Greek yoghurt

The goal isn't perfection.
It's simply to start noticing whether protein is actually making it onto your plate.

And if you're currently trying to lose weight, get stronger or feel better through perimenopause or menopause, don't make calories the only number you pay attention to.

Your body needs nourishment, not restriction.

๐Ÿ’œ Save this for your next food shop and use it as a reminder to stock up on some easy protein sources.

And if you're a woman in midlife who's ready to get stronger without spending your life dieting and doing endless cardio, that's exactly what I help women do.

TIRED ALL THE TIME?
YOUR BODY MAY BE ASKING FOR LESS, NOT MORE.

If you're exercising regularly but feeling increasingly exhausted, sore, wired, unmotivated or justโ€ฆ not yourself, adding another workout might not be the answer.

And this is particularly important during perimenopause.

Hormonal fluctuations can affect sleep, recovery, energy and how well you tolerate stress. Add work, family, life and poor sleep into the mix, and your body can end up dealing with far more stress than you realise.

So how do you know when you're doing too much?
๐Ÿšฉ You're constantly tired
๐Ÿšฉ You're sore for days after training
๐Ÿšฉ Your performance is getting worse, not better
๐Ÿšฉ You're struggling to sleep
๐Ÿšฉ You feel unusually irritable or unmotivated
๐Ÿšฉ Your workouts feel harder than they used to
๐Ÿšฉ You're taking fewer rest days because you feel guilty

One bad night's sleep or one tired workout doesn't mean you're overtraining.
But if several of these are becoming your normal, it's time to listen!

Because more isn't automatically better.

Your body needs time AND enough recovery to actually make those adaptations.

๐Ÿ’œ Strength training
๐Ÿ’œ Walking and lower-intensity movement
๐Ÿ’œ Quality nutrition
๐Ÿ’œ Adequate sleep
๐Ÿ’œ Rest days
๐Ÿ’œ Adjusting training when your body needs it

That's not โ€œdoing lessโ€.
That's training intelligently.

At PurpleBodyBalance, I don't believe women should be following a one-size-fits-all exercise plan.

Your training should take into account your goals, your experience, your energy, your recovery and where you are in your hormonal journey.

THE AUTUMN RESET STARTS NOW

September doesn't have to mean starting over again.

The summer holidays are over.
The kids are back at school.
Work is getting busy again.

And suddenly there's that familiar feeling......
"Right. I need to get back on track."

But what if you don't need to start again?
What if you just need to pick up where you left off?

Maybe you missed a few workouts over the summer.
Maybe your routine disappeared completely.
Maybe you enjoyed more meals out, stayed up later and moved a little less.

That's called living your life. ๐Ÿ’œ
You haven't failed.
You don't need to punish yourself with a strict diet or suddenly exercise 6 days a week.
You don't need to "undo" your summer.

Instead, September can be about gently rebuilding your rhythm.

โœจ Get back to strength training 2โ€“3 times a week.
โœจ Start walking regularly again.
โœจ Eat nourishing meals that actually keep you satisfied.
โœจ Prioritise your sleep and recovery.
โœจ Listen to your energy instead of forcing yourself through exhaustion.

And if you're in perimenopause or menopause, remember that your body may not respond to exercise and dieting in the same way it did 10 or 20 years ago.

That's not failure.
It's a reason to change the strategy.

The goal isn't to be perfect.
The goal is to build something sustainable enough that you don't have to keep starting over.

Because imagine reaching December and looking back thinking:

"I'm so glad I started in September."

Not because you lost the most weight.
But because you're stronger.
More energised.
More confident.
And finally trusting your body again.

Who's ready for a fresh season without the pressure?

๐Ÿ’œ Comment "AUTUMN" if you're ready to get back into a routine that works with your body.

For a more sustainable approach to strength, fitness and hormone-aware training, follow Purple BodyBalance for that practical midlife fitness support.

WHAT WORKED IN YOUR 30s MAY NOT WORK THE SAME WAY IN YOUR 40s.

If you've suddenly found yourself thinking...
"Why isn't this working anymore?"

You're not alone.

Maybe you're exercising just as much as you used to.
Maybe you're eating the same way.
Maybe you're pushing yourself harder because you think that's what you need to do.

But your body isn't exactly the same body it was 10 or 15 years ago.

As we move through our 40s and into perimenopause, changing hormones, muscle mass, sleep, stress and recovery can all affect how our bodies respond to exercise.

That doesn't mean you need to give up.
It means your strategy may need to change.

โŒ More cardio โ†’ ๐Ÿ’ช More strength
You don't need to endlessly burn calories.
Building and maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important.

โŒ Push through exhaustion โ†’ ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ Respect recovery
Training harder when you're already depleted isn't always productive.
Recovery is part of the training process.

โŒ Same workout every day โ†’ ๐Ÿ”„ Train according to your energy
Your body won't necessarily feel the same every day or every phase of your cycle.

โŒ Eat less โ†’ ๐Ÿฅ— Fuel better
Your body needs adequate nutrition to support training, muscle and recovery.

โŒ Ignore stress โ†’ โค๏ธ Consider the whole picture
Your workout doesn't happen in isolation.
Sleep, work, family, stress, nutrition and hormones all come along with you.

The answer isn't to work harder.
It's to work smarter and more intentionally.

Your body hasn't suddenly "stopped working."
Maybe it's simply asking you to work with it instead of against it.

WHY SEPTEMBER FEELS SO OVERWHELMING

September can feel like someone pressed the FAST-FORWARD button on life.

School runs.
Packed lunches.
Work deadlines.
After-school activities.
Household jobs.
A diary that suddenly seems to have no empty spaces.

And somewhere amongst all of that, you're trying to exercise, eat well, sleep better and somehow find time to breathe. ๐Ÿ˜…

If you're feeling overwhelmed right now, you're not failing at "balance".

Your body is responding to a LOT of change.

Stress doesn't just affect your mood. Your stress response can influence sleep, energy, appetite, recovery and how well you tolerate exercise.

And when you're already running on empty, adding another punishing workout to your week isn't necessarily the answer.

So instead of asking:

"How can I fit more into my day?"

Try asking:

"What actually supports me right now?"

๐Ÿ’œ Schedule your workouts. Put them in your diary like an appointment rather than hoping you'll find the time.

๐Ÿ’œ Keep them realistic. Two good strength sessions are better than planning five and doing none.

๐Ÿ’œ Build movement into your day. A 20-minute walk still counts.

๐Ÿ’œ Adapt your intensity. A stressful week may call for strength, walking or mobility rather than smashing yourself with HIIT.

๐Ÿ’œ Stop waiting for the perfect week. Life will always be busy. Your routine needs to work with your life.

And if you're cycling, don't forget that your energy can fluctuate throughout the month too.

Some days you're ready to lift heavy and challenge yourself.
Other days, your body may be asking for something gentler.
That's not inconsistency. That's listening.

September doesn't need to be your month of doing MORE.
It can be your month of doing what matters. ๐Ÿ’œ

What's your biggest challenge this September.....time, energy, motivation or stress?

September doesn't need to be your fresh start.

You don't need to suddenly become the woman who gets up at 5am, exercises 6 days a week, drinks 3 litres of water, meal preps everything and never eats a biscuit again. ๐Ÿ˜‚

And you definitely don't need to feel guilty because you didn't "stick to it" all summer.

September is often marketed as the perfect time to start again.

New season.
New routine.
New goals.
New YOU.

But here's what I want you to remember:

You don't need to start over.
You just need to continue.

Maybe your summer routine looked completely different. Maybe you exercised less, ate differently, stayed up later, went on holiday or simply prioritised enjoying yourself.

That's LIFE. ๐Ÿ’œ

You haven't undone everything.

Instead of throwing yourself into another all-or-nothing fitness plan, ask yourself:
โœจ What's one thing I was doing that made me feel good?
โœจ What can I realistically continue now?
โœจ What does my body actually need at this stage of my life?
โœจ What's one small habit I can build rather than another huge goal I can fail at?

Because sustainable fitness isn't about being perfect.

It's about creating habits that can survive busy weeks, holidays, tired days, hormonal changes, family life and everything else life throws at you.

And especially through perimenopause and midlife, your body may not respond to the same approach it did 10 or 20 years ago.

That doesn't mean you need to give up.
It means you may need to adapt.

So this September, don't chase a complete transformation.

Build something you can actually live with.

One workout.
One walk.
One nourishing meal.
One good night's sleep.
One small choice at a time.

Consistency doesn't mean never falling out of routine.

It means knowing how to come back without beating yourself up.

๐Ÿ’œ That's the kind of fitness I believe in.

For the woman inside that is looking for that habit, I am offering FREE sessions for NEW clients. DM or Comment "SEPTEMBER" for more information. ๐Ÿ’œ

๐Ÿ‘‡ What small habit are you building right now?
Tell me in the comments โ€” I'd love to hear it.

Stop waiting for January. Autumn is your secret weapon.

September has a funny way of making us want to start again.

The summer holidays are winding down. The children are back at school. Routines begin to return. Evenings start getting darker and suddenly there's that little voice saying:

"I really need to get back into shape."

But here's my adviceโ€ฆ

Don't wait until January.

Autumn can be one of the BEST times of the year to build strength, consistency and healthy habits that actually last.

And there's a reason for that.

๐Ÿ‚ Routine starts to return.

After the unpredictability of summer, having more structure around your days makes it easier to create regular exercise and meal routines.

๐Ÿ’ช It's the perfect season for strength.

Rather than chasing quick fixes or trying to "burn off" summer, use autumn to focus on building muscle, getting stronger and improving what your body can DO.

๐Ÿง  Your mindset can shift too.

Instead of exercising because you feel you should, start training because you want to feel stronger, more capable and more confident.

๐Ÿ˜ด You can prioritise recovery.

As the evenings draw in, it's a natural opportunity to focus on sleep, rest and recovery โ€” all incredibly important for women navigating perimenopause and menopause.

And perhaps most importantlyโ€ฆ

You don't need to start perfectly.
You don't need a six-week challenge.
You don't need to exercise every single day.
You don't need to dramatically change your diet.

Start with a few things you can consistently maintain.
2โ€“3 strength sessions a week.
Regular walks.
Enough protein.
Good hydration.
Better sleep.
And recovery when your body needs it.

That's how you build something sustainable.

Because the woman who starts building healthy habits in September isn't desperately trying to "fix everything" in January.

She's already doing the work.

๐Ÿ‚ Autumn isn't the countdown to January.

It's your head start.

Save this as your autumn motivation and come back to it whenever you feel tempted to put your health on hold until the new year. ๐Ÿ’œ

๐Ÿ‚ SEPTEMBER DOESN'T NEED TO BE YOUR โ€œNEW MEโ€ MONTH.The summer holidays are over.And suddenly you're thinkingโ€ฆ"Right. I R...
01/09/2026

๐Ÿ‚ SEPTEMBER DOESN'T NEED TO BE YOUR โ€œNEW MEโ€ MONTH.

The summer holidays are over.
And suddenly you're thinkingโ€ฆ

"Right. I REALLY need to get back on it." ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

So you decide you're going to:
๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ Exercise 6 days a week
๐Ÿฅ— Completely overhaul your diet
๐Ÿ’ช Push yourself as hard as possible
๐Ÿ“‰ Lose all the holiday weight ASAP
โ€ฆand by October, you're exhausted and wondering why you couldn't stick to it.

Here's what I'd rather you did:

Don't restart. RESET. ๐Ÿ’œ
Because you haven't failed just because your routine changed over the summer.
That's LIFE.
It's simply time to find your rhythm again.

My September RESET checklist:
โ˜ Start smaller than you think you need to.
2/3 smaller workouts a week can be really effective

โ˜ Put your sessions in the diary.
Give it a place in your week.

โ˜ Don't try to โ€œmake upโ€ for summer.
No punishing workouts to compensate for having fun.

โ˜ Prioritise strength.
Build muscle rather than chasing calories burned.

โ˜ Keep moving outside your workouts.

โ˜ Leave room for recovery.
Especially if you're navigating perimenopause, more isn't automatically better.

โ˜ Aim for consistency, not perfection.
Missing one workout doesn't mean you've fallen off the wagon.

โ˜ Don't build a routine around the person you THINK you should be.
Build one around the woman you actually are.

Your family. Your energy. Your hormones. Your commitments.
Your life.

That's the approach I take with my PurpleBodyBalance clients.

Because the best exercise programme is the one you can actually keep doing.

๐Ÿ’œ If you've been putting off getting back into exercise because you don't know where to start, I currently offer FREE introductory sessions for new clients.

We'll talk about where you are now, what you want to achieve and what kind of training could realistically fit into your life.

DM me RESET if you'd like to find out more.

๐Ÿ‘‡ And tell me in the comments:

What's ONE healthy habit you're bringing back this September? ๐Ÿ’œ
