MVHR vs MEV – which would you choose?

After more than 30 years working in residential ventilation, Paul Harrington, Social Housing Director at Vortice, believes that might actually be the wrong question.

Drawing together his experience and knowledge of social housing refurbishment, Paul's latest article challenges us to ask:

What does this building actually need — and what can the landlord realistically maintain for the next 20 years?

MVHR has its advantages. So does MEV.

But the right strategy should consider the building, ventilation effectiveness, installation constraints, energy performance, maintenance, whole-life costs and resident experience.

Sometimes that assessment will lead to MVHR.

Sometimes it may lead to MEV.

The important thing is making an informed decision based on the building — not simply the technology.

But what about the energy? ⚡

MVHR recovers heat from extracted air. That's one of its major advantages.

But Paul Harrington, Social Housing Director at Vortice, believes the energy conversation in social housing refurbishment needs to go further.

Drawing on more than 30 years of residential ventilation experience, Paul asks whether theoretical efficiency always translates into the best real-world outcome.

Heat recovery is only part of the picture.

Electrical consumption, servicing, filters, maintenance, installation complexity and actual long-term system performance all need to be considered.

A system can perform brilliantly on paper — but it still needs to be correctly installed, balanced and maintained throughout its life.
