After a day of downwind drives, one last upwind drive to catch up with a few.

The flank is often overlooked in terms of its importance. Five or six people either side of the line of butts, eventually joining up with the beaters to stop the grouse escaping out the side.

Sporting Agent Ollie Severn talks us through why the job matters, out on the flank today in southern Scotland, where a wind gusting 30-40mph is driving the grouse through the guns at pace.

Blink and you’ll miss them. Watch how quickly the grouse pass through the line of Guns. Red grouse can fly at speeds of 70-80mph, making them one of the fastest game birds, reaching top speed low to the ground with a tailwind behind them.

The grouse season so far: Mr Osborne's September verdict.

Before the season, we forecast a much better year than the last three, with strong regional variation. Writing at the start of September, that is exactly what has happened. The North Pennines is good and in places very, very good, with a lot of Grouse in parts of Swaledale, Wensleydale and Hexhamshire, though patchy even on adjoining ground. The Peak District is better than it has been for a couple of years. Lancashire, West Yorkshire and the North York Moors remain poor, the latter still carrying the residue of a horrendous Heather Beetle attack, and the Highlands are poor beyond the best keepered Moors. The good news for next year: the heather has improved significantly after the rain.

Days are very likely to be released as Moors assess their stocks, sometimes at very short notice. If you would like to be on the list for opportunities this season, email [email protected] or call Ollie Severn on +44 (0) 7540 899059.

A few sights from the moor this week. While heather beetle bit the North York Moors hardest, it has also touched some of the Dales and Pennines. It's a tiny bug but the damage can be huge. Fortunately, the green shoots are starting to push through, showing the heather is recovering, helped by the recent rain.

The round grouse butts are one of the most striking sights on the hill, but they're deceptively disorientating once the packs start coming thick and fast. That's exactly why butt sticks matter: they keep each Gun's arc of fire clear and safe. You will also note the “sodding” looking a bit sorry for itself, likely due to the very dry weather.

The long-awaited UK partridge season is finally upon us.

Ollie Severn's season verdict in this week's newsletter covers the ground that matters: a dry summer that punished late-drilled cover crops but rewarded the shoots that moved early; the welcome relaxation of partridge release restrictions on SPAs, including in the North York Moors; and, encouragingly, birds that have reared well and released successfully across the majority of the Estates we work closely with.

None of it happens by accident. The hours put in by Game Farms, keepers and their teams through the spring and summer are considerable, and September is when the results begin to show.

From October the season heads abroad too, with driven Barbary partridge at El Koudia in Morocco, and single pegs available through our Offbeat Syndicate for Guns without a full team.
