Spartan Beast completed yesterday.
A few valuable lessons learnt, most interesting amongst them;

You can do really well at OCR with very little actual running training.
I did 3 running sessions in the last 5 weeks and I think they were my first this year! Is that ideal? Perhaps not, but it was still do-able.
So what's the secret?

Get strong first!
For the last year my training has revolved around achieving the Strongfirst Lifters cert (SFL), maintaining my SFG level 1 standards and looking towards the SFG level 2 requirements.

Ok, for the first 6 months of the year I was doing a long walk 1x a week in prep for hiking & mountaineering.
I roll Jiu Jitsu 2-3x a week which also helps with cardio and keeps me strong at awkward angles.
I drink lots of water and eat clean...ish!

Moral of the story
1) Put first things first, Strength is the basis for all other physical (and many mental) attributes, so don't neglect your base!

2) A little more running will probably help me out in future OCR but it isn't a deal-breaker. KB swings and Turkish Get ups get a surprising amount done!

I don't think I'm very talented at much.
I've never naturally excelled at a sport, a form of art or an academic subject.
I love Jiu Jitsu, Strength training and fitness but I've watched people with natural talent come into these fields and quickly surpass me.
But I hold my own as a BJJ Purple belt, I'm an SFG instructor and have some decent strength feats under my belt. I got decent grades at school across the board and went on to graduate University as a Bachelor of Art.

My only secret is that I keep going. If I decide something is worth doing then I just don't quit.
I fail more often than I succeed but I just keep putting one foot in front of the other in the knowledge that eventually I will make it. If I have a talent, that's it.

Maybe there's something in that

They've both worked hard building up their strength and conditioning for some time now, its paid off!
