Coming to the end of such a fun filled day. So grateful to all the teachers and therapists who made today possible and to each of you who came along to play, relax and try something new!

Still one day to go. 🤗 ❤️🤩💥💗

Big thanks to Dani for being a complete dream in the kitchen and front of house today! (as well as on the mat of course) and to Will for creating these magical spaces for us to use ~ turning rooms into sanctuaries.❤️💫 I don’t think there is anything you can’t turn your hand to (including being a brilliant barista! )

Slow down, breathe and relax with Dani this evening 7pm-8pm.

Your breath is such a simple, free and easy tool to help you relax. So much of the time we don't breathe properly, effectively, using the full capacity of our lungs. We therefore end up breathing into our chest quickly, and in short bursts. This tells our brains we aren't 'safe'. ⁠⁠

In an attempt to simplify and slow down, this week I'm going to share with you a gentle, soothing and calming practice to remind your brain and your body that you are indeed 'safe'. Correct breathing habits are important because they provide the the body with enough oxygen for our brains, and breathing deeply is one of the most efficient strategies for coping with stressful situations, anxiety or stress.⁠⁠

Gua Sha with Awel Acupuncture

Maggie Cross is an acupuncturist in training. She is half way through her three year course at the prestigious Acupuncture Academy in Leamington Spa.

Gua Sha is an ancient self-care practice used in traditional Chinese medicine. The tool (often made from jade) is scraped across the skin to redirect energy flow. Stagnant energy (or ‘Qi’) is broken down, reducing inflammation, increasing blood flow and stimulating the lymphatic system to promote healing.

Acupuncturists will sometimes offer a rigorous Gua Sha body massage as a treatment.
A gentler version of the technique works wonders on your face and you can learn to do it yourself at home.

What Gua Sha facials can do for you
~improve circulation
rejuvenate, tone and smooth skin
~boost collagen
~brighten complexion
tone chin, jawline and neck
~regulate oil production
~improve nutrient delivery and product absorption
~minimise the appearance of scars, fine lines and wrinkles
~combat pigmentation, dark circles and puffy eyes decongest sinuses
relax and reduce tension

What do I need to bring? ~
💫Just yourself!
💫If you have a facial oil and/or Gua Sha tool then you can bring them along to use on the day. Don’t worry if not!
💫Wear a loose fitting, comfortable top so that we can easily access your neck and shoulders.

Let's talk about Yin and breathing...⁠⁠
⁠⁠
In many other styles of Yoga you are asked by your teacher to breathe deeply, maybe using a 'Ujjayi' (victorious/ocean) breath and maybe also match each movement of the flow sequence to either the inhale or the exhale. This can be deeply meditative, heating and give a point of focus for the practice.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
In Yin, it's different. Yin Yoga is a practice of UNDOING; it is a cooling and soothing practice to help guide you into a relaxed state. You don't need to 'do' anything or 'activate' anything. It's a practice of letting your breath fall away. In Yin, there are no particular breathing exercises or styles that you need to be using during the poses. I invite my students, having guided them into a Yin posture, to let the breath go; breathe naturally but ask them to consider:⁠⁠
⁠⁠
💫 Where is the breath entering/leaving your body?⁠⁠
💫 How long is the breath?⁠⁠
💫 Can you even out the texture of the breath?⁠⁠
💫 How deeply are you taking the breath in?⁠⁠
⁠⁠
In Yin, use the breath as you point of focus to guide you back to a meditative state rather than trying to force or mould it. Allow it to be your anchor.⁠⁠
