🏑 MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT REPORT 🏑

On Saturday 12th September Chard Hockey Club held its second tournament in memory of Kev Mooney who died suddenly in April last year, having played for Chard for 47 years.

Current Club members were joined by former players, many of whom had played alongside Kev during his career.

Organiser Steve Dare and Kev's daughter Charlotte spoke briefly before the first game to thank all those taking part and to remind them and the sizeable gathering of spectators that all match fees, donations and the proceeds of the barbecue afterwards hosted by Chard Cricket Club were destined for the British Heart Foundation.

Once play got under way, it was apparent that the teams, captained by Charlotte Mooney, Graeme Johnson and Nathan Johnson, were very evenly matched, so much so that the first two games yielded just one goal between them, Graeme's XI just pipping Charlotte's side.

The final game set up a father versus son encounter and provided a fitting climax to the tournament, young Nathan's team swiftly establishing a two goal first half lead before Graeme's side halved the deficit just before halftime. It looked as though it would be Graeme's hands on the trophy when his team scored an equaliser with just three and a half minutes to go but, in the final minute Nathan himself scored his side's third goal to claim the win and the prize.

Thanks go to Steve Dare for organising the tournament in liaison with Charlotte, Ben Larcombe and Gareth Eggle for umpiring, Chard Cricket Club for hosting us after the tournament, Tom Eames for donating a lamb for the barbecue and Steve Dare again for the BBQ sausages.

📢 The 2026/27 season is nearly here! 🏑

Here are our training times for the new season, with all training restarting on 9th & 10th September.

Please note a change to junior training: boys and girls will now both train on Wednesdays, 7–8pm.

Whether you’re returning to the pitch, thinking about picking up a stick again, or fancy trying something completely new, new members are always welcome! 🙌

🏆 KEV MOONEY TOURNAMENT 🏆

Chard Hockey Club will once again be holding a memorial tournament to remember and celebrate the life of Kev Mooney.

Our popular summer Pay & Play sessions return from Wednesday 1st July!

These social sessions are open to everyone aged 13+, whether you’re a current player, returning to the game, or completely new to hockey.

🏑 CHARD HOCKEY CLUB AGM 🏑

A reminder that our AGM will take place at 7:30pm on Tuesday 16th June in the upstairs function room at The Phoenix.

It is vitally important that as many members as possible attend. The AGM will be your opportunity to hear about how the club is run, discuss topics such as club roles and membership fees, and vote on proposals that will help shape the future of Chard Hockey Club.

✨ TEAM SPOTLIGHT: LADIES’ 1S ✨

The Ladies’ 1st XI produced an outstanding season, finishing unbeaten with an incredible record of 17 wins and 1 draw to secure the league title and promotion to Sedgemoor 1 🏆💪

From the very first game, the squad set high standards and consistently delivered impressive performances, combining attacking quality with resilience and teamwork throughout the campaign.

🏑 Season highlights included a number of dominant victories and crucial performances in key matches, with the team showing their quality week in, week out on the way to becoming deserved league champions.

The commitment, determination, and togetherness shown across the season made this a truly special year for the Ladies’ 1s — deservedly earning them Team of the Year honours. 👏

The Ladies 2nd XI showed incredible growth throughout the season, developing from a side struggling for stability into a team capable of competing week in, week out.

This season was about more than just results. Week by week the team grew in confidence, skill, and togetherness - creating a team spirit that felt like a family.

The resilience and positivity shown across the season were a credit to every player involved, and the progress made this season leaves plenty to be proud of heading into next year.

✨ TEAM SPOTLIGHT: MEN’S 1S ✨

The Men’s 1st XI faced a challenging and competitive season, finishing 10th in Division 2 Central.

The team showed real quality going forward throughout the season, picking up important victories and pushing strong opposition all the way in several closely contested matches.

Season highlight:
Finishing the season on a high with an emphatic 6-0 win over Tiverton White Eagles on the final weekend 🔥

✨ TEAM SPOTLIGHT: MEN’S 2S ✨

The Men’s 2nd XI faced plenty of selection challenges this season, with nearly 30 different players contributing across the campaign — but nothing could shake their spirit 💪

Eventually settling into an ‘old school’ style of play, with 3 up front and 3 in midfield, the team battled fiercely and made the most of the pace on the wings.

Season highlight:
A brilliant 4-1 away win at Bridport 👏

While the season ended with just 3 wins under their belt, this team showed outstanding tenacity, camaraderie, and fighting spirit from start to finish.
