What is Wing Chun?

Wing Chun is one of the most scientific and logical expression of martial arts. An air of finesse and geometric movements are the physical translation and expression of Wing Chun. Wing Chun directs 100 per cent of the force of the attack into an opponent, but this doesn't mean that it requires the practitioner to be physically strong. Wing Chun is logical

It uses all physical and geometric possib

The response to Part 1 has been really encouraging if you haven’t seen it yet, it’s worth going back first as it lays the groundwork for what’s coming next.

In this part, we continue exploring the lesser-known layers of Wing Chun history, pieces that often get overlooked but help complete the bigger picture.

Part 3 will follow soon.

If you’re following along, you won’t want to miss what comes next.

🥋 Tribute to Chuck Norris

Schools of Kung Fu Essex would like to pay tribute to the legendary martial artist and actor Chuck Norris.

For many of us, Chuck Norris was one of the first people who made martial arts look powerful, disciplined, and honourable. His films and television shows inspired generations to start training and to follow the martial arts path.

The fight scene with Bruce Lee in Way of the Dragon remains one of the most iconic moments in martial arts history, showing not just fighting skill but respect, timing, control, and true martial spirit.

His influence can still be seen today every time a student walks into class wanting to become stronger, more confident, and more disciplined.

We are grateful to the pioneers who helped bring martial arts to the world. Chuck Norris was one of them.

Rest in peace. Your legacy will live on in every martial artist who trains with heart.

Word of the Week: Fear

Fear stops more people than failure ever will.
Most people don’t fail because they can’t do something…
They fail because they never try in the first place.

In training we see this all the time.
Students afraid to grade.
Afraid to spar.
Afraid to make mistakes.
Afraid they’re not good enough.

But confidence doesn’t come before action…
It comes after you face what scares you.

This week in class we remind our students:
Don’t let fear destroy the dream.

This week’s challenge…
Do one thing that scares you.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing mums in our Schools of Kung Fu family 🌸

Shout out to the mums who…
✔ Drive to class every week
✔ Sit in the car waiting for training to finish
✔ Know the grading dates better than the kids
✔ Wash the uniform 100 times
✔ Remind them to practise
✔ Pay the fees
✔ And still hear…
“I don’t want to go today…”

Then 45 minutes later they come out smiling like nothing happened 😄

Special respect to the mums who have also heard…
“Did you bring my belt?”
“Did you bring my water bottle?”
“What time is class again?”

We don’t just train the kids…
We train the parents too 👊

Tag a Kung Fu mum who deserves a medal today 🥇
Or comment ❤️ if this sounds familiar

Happy Mother’s Day from everyone at Schools of Kung Fu

Great food, great company, and a chance to relax and connect away from the training hall. These evenings are an important part of our community and a perfect way to round off the year.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make it such an enjoyable night. We’re already looking forward to the year ahead 👊

For many years, I’ve had the privilege to study deeply within several Taijiquan lineages — each one shaping my understanding of internal martial arts in its own profound way.

I began my Taijiquan journey in 2004 with my Sipak in the Leung Ting Wing Tsun system Sifu Alan Fong, some years later I started in earnest diving deeply into Huang Taijiquan, studying privately under Wee Kee Jin in Auckland, New Zealand, and other students of the late Huang Shen Shyan, such as Jeng Shean Chih during my visits to Taiwan.

Later, I immersed myself in Tian Zhaolin Taijiquan in Shanghai, even moving there for almost six months to train six hours a day. In July 2015, I was honoured to receive the certificate marking completion of the entire Tian Zhaolin unarmed system from Tian Bing Yuan, grandson of Tian Zhaolin himself.

the last decade also took me often to Vancouver, where I continued private studies with Sifu Tam Man Yin, a teacher who needs no introduction within the Chinese internal martial arts world, a real virtuoso in Yang Taijiquan and Yiquan.

In the past two years, I had the chance to become a lineage holder in the Yang Shao Hou – Gu Lisheng tradition through a formal Bai See ceremony with Sifu Chi Qisheng, continuing weekly online training with his senior students after his unfortunate passing, together with Sifu Yuri Morelli we made a promise to Sifu Chi and we intend to keep our word, next to the weekly online lessons we are recieving annual corrections in Guiyang, China.

So, with such a background, why did I choose to dedicate myself so intensively over the last two years to the Wu Taijiquan lineage of the late Ma Yueliang, training directly with Sifu Zhou Zhong Fu privately in China, Madeira and Turkey. First off all Sifu Zhou is a fantastic teacher who studied with two senior indoor students of Ma Yueliang as well as Ma yueliang directly and gave me the chance of spreading the indoor system of Ma Yueliang throughout Europe together with Sifu Kleber Battaglia.

Secondly because the Eternal Spring Institute represents what we call the university-level master classes of my association the IWKA and its School of Kung Fu department. Furthermore the Eternal Spring institute provides that same service for the many other associations that work together with the institute, it’s really a place where deep research, and authentic transmission are put in the foreground.

The Ma Yueliang Wu Style system belongs in the line up as it’s simply one of the most complete and refined Taijiquan curricula in existence.
It includes:

🌀 Short Form
🌀 Long Form
🌀 Fast Form (passed from Yang Shao Hou to Wu Jianquan)
🌀 24 Spear, 13 Long Spear & Sticky Spear
🌀 Sword & Two-Man Sword
🌀 Saber
🌀 5 Single-Hand & 13 Double-Hand Tui Shou Cycles, Da Lu, 7 stepping patterns under which the 9 Palace Steps and more

Ma Yueliang, as the son-in-law of Wu Jianquan, had unique access to the authentic transmission in an unbroken line of teachings from Yang Lu Chan and Yang Ban Hou through Wu Quan Yu and Wu Jianquan, preserving a living lineage that remains complete and vibrant.

Of course the Yang Jian Hou branch of the Yang Family holds some other treasures — the 88 San Shou form, Middle Frame (Zhong Jia), and the Yang Family Ba Duan Jin — all of which we also continue to cherish and teach within the Schools of Kung Fu department of the IWKA and the Eternal Spring Institute.

True Taijiquan is a lifelong journey.
Each lineage, each transmission regarding the cultivation of the Internals, each teacher added a unique piece to the puzzle — guiding me to ever deeper understanding and refinement.

“I've purchased copies of Wing Chun Illustrated before and always enjoyed the articles, but what really stood out was the magazine's quality. I ordered this hardcover edition because my Sifu, Alton Miller, was on the cover. When my copy arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by just how premium it felt – the binding, paper quality, and even the packaging were all top-notch. I also received a friendly email from Eric, the publisher and Editor-in-Chief, personally checking if I was satisfied with my purchase – an exceptional touch of customer service. Now, time to dig in and enjoy the read! I HIGHLY recommend WCI Premium Hardcover editions!”

We are proud to share that our very own SiFu Kul Rai, National Instructor for England, is featured on the cover of Wing Chun Illustrated! 🥋

This special feature dives into SiFu Kul’s Wing Chun journey, his passion for teaching, and how the art continues to evolve while staying true to its core principles.

“Wing Chun should evolve with modern martial arts, not by changing principles but by refining teaching and application. Training must involve pressure, varied attacks, and prioritise function over tradition.” – SiFu Kul Rai

A huge thank you to our amazing community for the constant support – this recognition is for all of us at Schools of Kung Fu Essex! 💪
