"look maa no hands!" The most common excuse we hear for not wanting to try climbing is easily "I've got really weak arms". So to prove this statements irrelevance, here's Chris climbing without his arms entirely!

In many ways climbing is a solitary sport...its you Vs the wall. However, as this takes away the competitive vibe, it creates a hugely supportive community and an environment in which great friendships are formed. Come along and youll see what I mean! Don't miss out!

Hey guys! Just something that might be of interest, Conrad Anker is speaking at Cheltenham Town hall on April 10th. Conrad is literially one of the best living mountaineers and mountaineers pretty much ever. He's done Everest (multiple times), Meru, Yosemite big wall stuff, sort of everything really. So what on earth brought him to Chetenham... Anyway it's well worth looking into if you're free that night! http://www.cheltenhamtownhall.org.uk/event/conrad-anker-hold-fast-239956/

Hey all! Just a quick update for you: there will be no climbing in the coming week (March 11-15) due to the cheltenham races screwing up travel. There’s no good way to get to Gloucester in race week other than walking so there’ll be no sessions all of the coming week!

Hey guys,

So as some of you know, Varsity is around the corner and the climbing club will taking part in the competition. The competition will be on the 9th of April at the warehouse where we will be doing Speed Climbing and Bouldering. We require a team of 15ppl. If interested, drop us a message and we will place you into consideration.

Now, knowing this is a competition, we will require those who join the team to climb at least once a week. Preferably on Tuesdays because that is when we will do training for the team. There is no requirement of how good you are to join the team so everyone is more than welcomed to compete. However, the requirement is only 15ppl so we will have to select if we have more that 15.

For more info, drop us a message. :)

Hey guys!

Sooooo let’s talk lead climbing. Lots of you guys have spoken to me and Brandan about learning how to lead and we’re up for teaching you guys how to do it. So if you want to learn:

We (myself and Brandan) need to see you consistently doing good top rope climbing. To be clear this does not mean HARD top rope climbing, grades do not matter. We need to see that you are consistent in good safety practices (so excellent belaying, rope management, buddy checks, textbook knots and a working knowledge of harness and belay device usage in the context of indoor top roping). We won’t do an exam style thing where you prove you can do stuff once, we need to see you guys do these things consistently in an informal setting and see a clear desire to progress in roped climbing.

If you don’t feel like you could do this but still want to learn to lead, no problem! We don’t expect you guys to all be completely ready to go. Talk to us about things you’re not sure of or if you want a refresher on anything. It goes without saying but it’s better to double check if you’re uncertain than get someone hurt/killed.

Lead climbing is really rewarding and lots of fun, but is enormously more complex than top roping. So you must master top roping before you move onto leading as there are more variables and therefore more things that can go wrong.

Once we feel you’re ready we’ll start teaching you. There’s a lot more to learn than with top roping, so it’ll be a longer process. After that though, you’ll be able to lead climb and take your climbing further. Leading starts to open up roped climbing outdoors and more interesting indoor climbing.

Either myself or Brandan will always be in the main arena every training session so if you need a belay or want to practice your own belaying just let us know! We really hope you guys do decide to consider leading as it’ll take your climbing so much further!

Hope to see you guys tonight,

Joe

Hey guys,

As you know the trip to Bloc is this Saturday (27th of Oct). We will be taking the train down to Stapleton Road station. Then those who want to buy climbing gear will get their chance to purchase them from Bananafingers, followed by a day of bouldering in Bloc. We recommend you get an open return for that day. If you are coming from Cheltenham we will be getting the 9:36am train and if you are coming from Gloucester take the 9:48am train so we will reach Stapleton Road the same time. Committee members will be at Cheltenham Spa at 9:15am and you won’t miss us.

Hope to see you guys there 🙂
