Electrolytes aren’t just for elite athletes in hot environments. It anytime of the year.
They’re for anyone who trains, sweats, sits in air con all day, drinks a lot of water, or feels flat for no obvious reason.
Sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium aren’t extras. They’re involved in blood flow, nerve signalling, muscle contraction, and cell osmosis, how fluid actually moves in and out of cells (Cell osmosis). If those are off, you can drink litres and still feel dehydrated, crampy, heavy-legged or mentally foggy.
Water without electrolytes can just dilute you. That’s why “drink more water” on its own isn’t always the fix.
Tip:
Not sure how much you sweat? Weigh yourself before and after training. The drop is mostly fluid loss. That gives you a real number instead of guessing.
If you want to handle heat better, especially training abroad or in hotter climates, look at thermoregulation as well. Clothing choice, gradual heat exposure, saunas, and getting electrolytes in before you’re already cooked, not after.
This isn’t about being extreme. It’s about giving your nervous system and muscles what they need so the work you’re already doing actually lands.
