π SEA SAFETY: The tide doesnβt just go βin and outββ¦
Itβs a big misconceptions about the sea.
Weβre taught that the tide comes in and the tide goes out, so naturally we picture the water moving straight towards the beachβ¦ and then straight back out again.
But thatβs not really how tidal flow works.
π As the tide floods and ebbs, tidal currents can flow along the coastline, meaning you may find yourself being moved sideways, left or right, rather than simply towards or away from shore.
Thatβs why you can get into the sea, start swimming, look up a few minutes later and thinkβ¦
βHang onβ¦ how did I end up all the way over here?!β π³
And itβs also why understanding the tide where you swim matters. The direction and strength of tidal currents vary hugely depending on the coastline, headlands, bays, channels and stage of the tide.
β οΈ And donβt confuse tidal current with a rip current. Rips are different, they can carry water and swimmers away from the shore, and knowing how to recognise and respond to them is another important sea skill.
The sea is always moving, just not necessarily in the direction you expect.
Donβt just learn to swim in the sea. Learn how the sea works. ππ
