🐴 IT TAKES A TEAM 🤝

When it comes to equine performance and rehabilitation, no one professional works in isolation. Every horse is an individual, and the best outcomes come from different professionals working together towards the same goal. 💚

🩺 Vets — diagnosis, veterinary treatment and monitoring recovery.

🐎 Farriers — supporting hoof balance, biomechanics and overall limb health.

🦷 Equine Dentists — maintaining dental health and ensuring the horse is comfortable when eating and working.

💆🏼 Physiotherapists — supporting muscular function, mobility and recovery.

👐 Chiropractors — where appropriate, supporting musculoskeletal function as part of the wider team.

🏋🏼‍♀️ Cox Equine Performance & Rehabilitation — bridging the gap between veterinary advice and the horse’s day-to-day exercise. I work with the horse and owner to create individualised rehabilitation and performance plans, carefully progressing exercise and monitoring how the horse responds along the way with specialised equipment.

🏡 Owners, riders & yard teams — you are just as important! You’re the ones seeing the horse every day and putting the plan into practice.

Good communication between everyone involved means we can work with each other, not against each other, and make sure every aspect of the horse’s health, comfort and performance is considered.

Because rehabilitation isn’t about one person fixing a problem.

It’s about building the right team around the horse. 🐴💚

ever heard the saying: “no hoof, no horse”?

The hoof plays a huge role in both performance and rehabilitation. Every stride places forces through the hoof, and healthy hoof balance helps the limb absorb concussion and move efficiently.

For performance horses, maintaining strong, balanced feet can support better movement, stability and overall performance. During rehab, hoof balance becomes even more important as we gradually rebuild strength, coordination and confidence in the limb.

The hoof is the foundation of movement — so it’s something we should never overlook when working towards a stronger, sounder horse. 🤎

LET’S TALK SPINES 🐴

The spine is quite literally the backbone of everything we ask our horses to do — so why is it so often overlooked until something goes wrong?

Throughout the industry, we’re becoming much better at recognising obvious signs of injury and discomfort, but spinal health and postural strength can sometimes be an afterthought.

And it shouldn’t be.

The equine spine plays a huge role in movement, balance, strength and the horse’s ability to perform comfortably. Whether your horse is a happy hacker, competition horse or currently on a rehabilitation programme, maintaining a strong and well-functioning spine should be part of the bigger picture.

Having had experience working with horses following kissing spine surgery and rehabilitation, I’ve seen just how important a carefully structured approach can be when rebuilding strength and movement.

This is where I love incorporating specialised rehabilitation and performance equipment, including red light therapy and balance pads, where appropriate.

🔴 Red light therapy can be incorporated into a programme to support tissue health and recovery.

🟢 Balance pads provide a controlled proprioceptive challenge, encouraging body awareness, postural control and stability.

And these tools aren’t exclusively for rehabilitation. They can also be used within performance programmes to challenge the horse in a controlled way and help develop strength, stability and body awareness.

The key is understanding why you’re using something, rather than simply adding equipment for the sake of it. Every exercise, technique and piece of equipment should have a purpose within the horse’s individual programme.

Because looking after the spine shouldn’t only start when there’s a problem.

Prevention, preparation and performance all go hand in hand. 🐎

✨ Supporting recovery, performance, and comfort ✨

In this video I’m using my red light therapy wand on two very different cases:

🐴 A horse recovering from a strained check ligament to help support the healing process.

🐴 A horse returning to work following kissing spine surgery, targeting the muscles alongside the spine to help reduce tension and support comfort.

Every horse is different, which is why I believe rehabilitation should always be tailored to the individual. Small, consistent treatments can make a real difference when used alongside the appropriate veterinary guidance and rehabilitation plan.

I’m looking forward to sharing more of the therapies and techniques I’ll be offering through Cox Equine Performance & Rehabilitation.
