MFC Vets 0 – 1 Midway
We welcomed Midway to the Don Amott Arena on Sunday in the league. We were missing several key players through injury, so only had 14 available, including myself. Lillie also started the game carrying an injury he picked up during the week, but I always believe in the lads who put the shirt on.
We probably had the better chances in the first half, but the Midway keeper commanded his area well and pulled off some good saves when called into action. An early injury to Quig after 30 minutes was a big blow, meaning we had to shuffle things around, with me coming off the bench until Mannion returned from the toilet to replace me in the number 10 role.
It was a scrappy and frustrating first half, and we just couldn’t get our passing game going to our attacking players.
Half-time: 0-0
The second half saw both teams create chances, with both keepers making important saves. Then we lost our captain, Palms, to a challenge that has unfortunately ruled him out for the rest of the season with a minor break.
That forced another change, bringing on Wes, who hasn’t played many games this season due to injury. Instead of his usual right-back role, we dropped him into defensive midfield because we didn’t want to disrupt the back four. We also replaced Lillie, who battled through the pain barrier to give us 60 minutes. I came on to help see the game out.
The lads gave everything and it looked like we were going to hold on for a point, but in the final minutes a Midway player hit a shot that bounced up and struck Ash on the chest. Their striker reacted quickest to the loose ball and fired home to make it 0-1.
Far from our best performance this season all teams have off days and having so many injuries not helped. We just need to stick together and see our first season together out.
MOTM: Lillie
Battled through 60 tough minutes and would probably have seen the game out if I hadn’t dragged him off because he could barely walk.
We play Midway again on Sunday and will be without even more key players, with our injury list now into double figures. We travel with a small squad again, but this team will fight until the end.
