Pranayama is usually described as breath-control techniques or breathwork, but the meaning goes deeper than that.
The word pranayama comes from two Sanskrit words:
• prana – vital energy or life force
• yama/ayama – control or extension
Pranayama practices are said to activate and regulate this life force. By working with the breath in specific ways, we can move beyond our usual physical and mental limitations and reach a higher state of energy and awareness.
Lifestyle has a strong influence on the way we breathe. Physical activities such as exercise, work, sleep, eating habits, and even sexual activity can all affect how breath moves through the body. Our mental activities: emotions, thoughts, and imagination, also shape our breathing patterns.
When our lifestyle becomes irregular, for example through poor diet or ongoing stress, the natural flow of breath can become blocked or weakened. This is often felt as being “drained of energy.”
Pranayama techniques can help reverse this process by re-energising the body and restoring balance.
