Ryan Fox’s finish at The Open was seriously impressive. Fearless down the stretch!
It’s so refreshing how quick his pre-shot routine is, and it’s been a hot topic this week.
In an interview, he said he was ‘not quite sure’ how he hit that winning putt. To me that’s a sign of someone in flow state.
Flow doesn’t come from thinking lots of different thoughts. It comes from being completely immersed in the process, one that you’ve done again and again.
People always come to see me looking for consistency, but if your thoughts aren’t consistent how do you expect your shots to be?
Here’s a 3-step process to end your pre-shot routine, that’ll reduce overthinking, gain consistency and help you play fearlessly like Foxy:
Step 1: Ask yourself the question ‘What does my shot look like?’
This question focuses your mind and helps you visualise exactly what you want to happen.
Step 2: Ask yourself ‘What is my target?’
This ensures your mind is still engaged with your target after getting setup.
Step 3: Say these words out loud (in practice, in your head when with others 🤣)
‘Target. Ball. Go.’
This mantra takes away the opportunity to overthink. Keep the cadence the same between each word. No pauses on any of the words.
Save this video for your practice time and rehearse it to get more consistent

Really pleased with the week at the second Scottish PGA OOM event at Stirling Golf Club which was in fantastic condition!
Trying to work on being more satisfied with my performances overall, so here are my key takeaways:
• Opened with a -5, 67 to lead after round one
• Although the putter cooled off on day two, I stayed patient and avoided letting the round get away from me
• Short game was a huge positive with 91% scrambling over two rounds on some rapid greens
• 25/36 GIR
• 33/36 holes par or better
Now sitting 6th in the Order of Merit, the season has definitely gotten off to a strong start.
Looking forward to the next tournament!
