Congratulations to Desni McIntosh and Mhairi Wrench of Edinburgh Sports Club who secured the Grade 2 O50 Ladies' winners' title at this weekend's West of Scotland Padel tournament in Stevenston.

It’s always good to finish the week on a positive note and we’re delighted to report on amazing news of a fantastic result by an East player!

Vina Jamiolahmady’s recent exceptional performance, competing in four categories at the Deaf Tennis National Finals - at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton, southwest London - resulted in four victories! 🥇🥇🥇🥇

🏆🏆 In the Ladies’ Singles, Vina beat Middlesex’s Valerie Copenhagen (6-4, 3-6, 10-7) to take gold, adding to the one she’d already secured in the U18 Junior Singles.
🏆 She then clinched the U18 Junior Doubles title with partner Jacob Perry, as they beat Isla and Leo Fletcher in the final.
🏆Next, she teamed up with Charlie Denton to win the Mixed Doubles title, beating Esah Hayat and Valerie Copenhagen en route to that success (Esah Hayat having earlier won his ninth event title in a row).

Vina demonstrated incredible determination by playing for over six hours each day in complete silence without her hearing aids. In the Mixed Doubles final, she competed alongside and against two separate Olympians and was the only player in the entire tournament to win every single match. 💪

This was Vina’s second time competing in this GB-wide event, building on the two silver medals 🥈🥈 she secured last year. Those performances earned her invitations to two Team GB national camps which helped her tennis improve in leaps and bounds.

Over the summer, the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) featured her life journey, highlighting all the challenges associated with her deafness and how tennis is helping her overcome many of those issues. The cheers 📣 could be heard across the Forth this week as Dunfermline Tennis Club won the East of Scotland Interclub Men’s Singles! 🎾

The Dunfermline team of Scott Morrison, Lewis McIntosh and Greig Munro showed great skills and tenacity 💪 to defeat opponents Philip Kahl, Benjamin Bel and Oliver Payton of Hatton Sports Club in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

Thanks to everyone who took part in the competition, the volunteers, clubs and supporters.

Team GB Padel is competing in Buenos Aires this week at the 2026 FIP - International Padel Federation Senior World Cup. Out of the 11 players in the women’s squad, we’re incredibly proud that three are from East! 💪🏻

Earlier this week we heard from Ashley Mears (https://eastofscotlandtennis.uk/padel-to-the-river-plate/) and today we’re having a quick Q&A catchup with Rosie Dennis - pictured here with Ashley, East player Desni McIntosh and the only other Scot in the squad, John (South of Scotland).

Take it away Rosie! 🏓

How did you become involved in Padel?
“I started playing in 2024 at Edinburgh Sports Club and had played a lot of competitive tennis prior to that.
“Since taking up Padel, I have played in lots of tournaments around the UK, mainly grade 1 and 2. I’ve played in the Scotland senior team at the Four Nations and in the East of Scotland team at the Over 60 County Cup .This year my partner and I played in a grade 1 tournament in Jersey, having already played in the UK nationals in December 2025.”

What’s the attraction, for you, of Padel?
“I like the speed of play, the opportunity to volley, trying to create angled shots, the tactical challenge and the extra dimension of having the glass. It is a very sociable game, particularly as it is nearly always doubles.
“It has the same scoring as tennis and many shots are similar. However, the serve is underarm, the back and part of the sides of the court are glass and the court is much smaller than a tennis court. Ball placement and variation of pace are more important than power.”

How did selection for the GB team happen?
“Anyone wanting to be considered for selection applied through the LTA - Tennis For Britain. I think tournament results and rankings were then taken into consideration. I was told via email that I’d been selected and was, obviously, really excited to be in the squad.”

What are you most looking forward to about the experience?
“It is always great fun being part of a team and an honour to get to represent GB. It’s great to be taking on players from around the world and I’m enjoying the team atmosphere.”

We were thrilled to learn that three East of Scotland Padel players had been selected for the Great Britain women’s squad of 11 who are currently competing, with the men’s squad, in Buenos Aires for the 2026 FIP Senior World Cup (14-19 September).

We caught up with the players, as they were gearing up to set off on their South American adventure, to find out more.

First up, Ashley Mears, who captained the East O60 Padel squad to success at the County Cup in Bristol recently and who, along with Rosie Dennis, was pictured leading the charge at the opening ceremony!

UPDATE ⏰ : After a 2-4 loss against North of Scotland, the girls finished 4th in the group 🎾 Well played, team, and safe travels home 🛤️

There were some epic battles in Carlisle yesterday! Our U12 County Cup girls won 5-1 against South of Scotland then were edged 2-4 against Northumberland. With lots of really close matches, the girls fought incredibly hard throughout!

Today their opponents are North of Scotland and we’re sending our girls best wishes for a successful day two! 🎾💪🏻
