South West Alternative Provision

This week, we've kicked off our activities leading up to our end-of-term (and end-of-year) challenge — Escape Evasion! I can't express enough how excited the students are for what's shaping up to be one of our best challenges yet. It will be a wonderful way to celebrate and say farewell to our fantastic Year 11 students as they prepare to transition to their college placements and step into the next chapter of their education.

Additionally, we will be seeing others transition back into mainstream at the end of their placements with us.

This week, they have been busy honing their skills in grid references, map reading and camouflage and concealment —Hopefully, they’re proving to be pretty hard to spot in some of the photos!

We are looking forward to more great moments in the coming weeks!

🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️ Last week, our young people participated in a fantastic cycle ride from Exmouth to Exeter. The weather was perfect — sunny and bright — making the journey even more enjoyable. 😊

In the weeks leading up to the challenge, they learned about all aspects of bike maintenance and repair, as well as important road safety tips from the Highway Code. Their learning and preparation paid off!

We’re so proud of everyone for putting in their best effort and rising to the challenge. It was inspiring to see their determination, teamwork, and newfound knowledge throughout the ride. Well done to all! 👏🎉

🌟 What an Incredible Experience! 🌟

We just wrapped up our second Pen Y Fan Challenge, and what a difference a year makes! Last year, we faced high winds and rain, but this time, we were blessed with sunshine and stunning views from the summit. ☀️🏞️

Our young people truly rose to the occasion, displaying remarkable determination and resilience. It was inspiring to see them tackle each challenge with grit and teamwork, and we couldn’t be prouder of their hard work and spirit! 💪✨

We were also thrilled to have former students reaching out to join us on this adventure, showing the lasting impact of these experiences and the strong sense of belonging we've built together.

As we approach the end of term and our upcoming expedition day next week, our students have been diligently practicing their remind and revise first aid skills. They have been preparing their kits, mastering grid references, learning safety roping techniques and learning essential strategies for maintaining their physical and mental well-being during long-distance hikes.

Additionally, we are pleased to have welcomed two new young people at SWAP and our current students have shown great enthusiasm in making them feel included and connected from their very first days with us.

We are delighted with the feedback we’ve had from recent site visits from an educational psychologist and heads of year from 2 schools, they were incredibly positive about our practices. They observed our students during the remind and revise and preparation sessions and expressed their appreciation for the progress and engagement they witnessed. Their feedback has reinforced our commitment to fostering a supportive and effective learning environment for all our young people.

At SWAP, a fundamental part of what we do, is to foster self-esteem and social awareness among our young people. We focus on building confidence, empathy, and resilience, empowering them to thrive in various areas of their lives.

Once our students show growth in these key areas, they are given the exciting opportunity to mentor or lead their own activities. This experience not only reinforces their understanding of positive leadership but also enhances their communication skills. Additionally, it
fosters a sense of responsibility, strengthens bonds among peers, encourages self reflection, supports career readiness, empowers and encourages them to pursue their goals.

We recently wrapped up the first of our Autumn Term Challenges at Southwest Alternative Provision, a remarkable night navigation exercise!

During this event, our young participants showcased the invaluable skills they’ve developed throughout the term, including navigation, understanding sound and light, cooking in the field, first aid, shelter building, equipment care and much more.

At Southwest AP, our unique approach combines attachment-based mentoring with a military ethos, providing a supportive and inclusive environment that fosters resilience, personal growth and a strong sense of belonging. Many of our young individuals face a variety of challenges, from exclusion from mainstream education to social and emotional health needs and communication hurdles. Yet, it’s truly inspiring to witness their transformation during these end-of-term challenges. Those who are often overlooked rise to the occasion, shining with their resilience and potential.

They “SWAP” challenges for opportunities and their growth is a powerful reminder of what can happen when we create spaces and opportunities for them to be their very best. It was very dark during the exercise, which explains the lack of photos, but the light each of our young people brought to the experience was truly unforgettable. ✨👏🏼

Today, we kicked off our first Muay Thai session at the incredibleTwin Tigers Martial Arts and Boxing Club in Honiton! 🥋 We were warmly welcomed by the dojo’s dedicated owners,Paul and Cate Quick, who have worked tirelessly to create a top-tier training facility. 🙌

We’re thrilled to announce that Twin Tigers has agreed to host fortnightly Muay Thai sessions exclusively for our young people at SWAP. 💥

Twin Tigers Mixed Martial Arts & Boxing Gym Honiton | Martial Arts Club Twin Tigers mixed martial arts & boxing gym located in Honiton, Devon. Our mixed martial arts and boxing club welcomes all ages and abilities.

Today, under the guidance of our exemplary instructor, Darrell, two of our exceptional young lads went out into our community. Jack and Jacob combined valuable work experience with a noble cause by participating in a beach clean-up at Devon Cliffs Holiday Park and supporting the grounds team. In a surprising turn of events, they stumbled upon a stolen trike that belonged to the beloved Exmouth town crier, Roger. They took action, recovered the trike, and returned it to its rightful owner, refusing any reward in return. This heartwarming conclusion to the week at Southwest AP fills us with immense pride.

Jack and Jacob, your actions speak volumes, thank you for your selfless and honorable deeds. We hope that you both bask in the sense of fulfillment and pride that comes from knowing you've made a positive impact. Moments like these are truly special and can set individuals on a path of moral integrity. Let's all strive to seek out such moments that fill us with warmth and inspire us to uphold values of respect and doing the right thing. We are overflowing with pride as we reflect on the incredible achievement of the magnificent seven who persevered through challenging conditions of high winds, fog, and rain during this expedition. These remarkable young individuals didn't just exchange glances with adversity; they traded doubts for determination and SWAPped hesitation for courage. 😎Overcoming self-doubt, each and every one of them excelled beyond expectations. This experience will be etched in our memories for years to come, serving as a testament to their resilience and determination.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to our exceptional team who provided unwavering support and encouragement, pushing these lads out of their comfort zones and helping them reach new heights. Special gratitude to our instructor, Darrell (red coat) for skillfully capturing these unforgettable moments on camera. We are also grateful to Penstar Bunkhouse for graciously allowing us to use their outstanding facilities in the breathtaking Brecon Beacons.

We extend our deepest appreciation to the parents who have stood by and nurtured these young men, offering their encouragement and support. And last but certainly not least, a resounding thank you to the magnificent seven themselves for their dedication, enthusiasm, and unwavering effort. Your commitment made these three days truly epic, and we are immensely proud of each and every one of you, you have truly left an indelible mark on us all at SWAP.

Through a rigorous seven-week training program, these remarkable young individuals have honed their skills in essential areas such as map reading, kit packing, tabbing, and survival techniques. Their dedication, competence, and active participation have rightfully earned them a well-deserved place on this expedition.

Upon arrival today, they wasted no time in setting up camp and familiarising themselves with the environment and conditions they will be facing under the guidance of our expert leaders. Drawing from their expertise, our young adventurers are preparing themselves for the ultimate challenge tomorrow – the ascent of Pen y Fan.

These incredible young people, who have navigated personal challenges in mainstream education, have not only met but exceeded our expectations by embodying our core values and standards. Witness their resilience and determination as they conquer new heights and embrace the spirit of adventure. 🌟
