Training can be fun too 😄💪

Alongside the main strength work we do and progress in our 60+ Functional Training classes, I always like to include different games, finishers and a bit of variety too.

On Friday we brought back one of the finishers we had done previously, just to see how everyone would feel doing it again after a few weeks.

And they all noticed the difference. 😊 They said it felt much more manageable this time, and one of the ladies even started running between the boxes without really noticing it, when previously she was fast walking.

We had a good laugh, everyone encouraged each other and it brought the team together. This is why love this kind of finishers because while still working on our strength and fitness we also have a great time at the same time 🤩💪

Progress doesn’t always show in how much heavier weight we can lift. Sometimes it’s simply noticing that something you’ve done before feels that little bit easier this time, or adapting to a certain movement faster and with more confidence without even realising it.

One of our members mentioned recently that her dog ran off in the park, and without even thinking about it she started running after him. She said that’s something she would never have done before. ❤️Little changes like this in everyday life are showing the real progress we are making 💪

How much exercise do we actually need?

I thought I would start sharing a little more information around strength training and physical activity, because sometimes fitness can feel much more complicated than it actually needs to be.

According to WHO guidelines, adults should aim for 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week, or 75–150 minutes of vigorous activity, alongside strength training at least twice a week.

And this doesn’t mean you have to live in the gym.

Walking, cycling, swimming, classes, running, gardening and lots of everyday movement can all contribute.

Then add some strength work at least twice a week to help keep your muscles strong and capable.

For adults over 65, strength is still just as important, alongside extra work on balance and functional movement to prevent falls.

And probably the most important part:

If you’re not doing any of this yet, don’t feel like you suddenly need to do everything.

Start somewhere.

A couple of walks, gradually increase your daily activity, add 2 strength training sessions, or an extra class. One session is still better than none.

Build the habit gradually and try to limit sedentary activities like watching TV or scrolling on your phone, try to be as active as you can.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll share a little more about why strength training matters, including muscle mass, bone health, ageing and everyday life.

Because we hear so much that everyone should do strength training, let’s understand why. 💪

Understanding Functional Training ❤️

Since advertising our next 60+ Functional Training taster, I’ve had quite a few conversations with people who are interested in joining but still have questions or feel a little unsure about what functional training actually involves.

I completely understand that you don’t know what to expect wondering how a class would look like and probably have a thousand questions in your mind and hesitating if it’s something you could do. Especially if you’ve never been in a gym before, so I had a great idea 🙂

Next Wednesday I’m going to run a FREE Understanding Functional Training introduction workshop from 10:30–11:30am.

This isn’t a workout or a normal class. I’ll explain what functional training actually means, the main movements we use, why we train them and how these movements already show up in everyday life.

We’ll look at things like squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling and carrying how we use these movements in our every day life, some of the different equipment we use during classes and how every movement can be adapted depending on your own ability.

You’ll have the opportunity to try a few simple movements if you would like to, but you absolutely don’t have to. You can simply come along, watch, ask questions, meet me and get a better understanding of what our classes are all about. ❤️

We’ll also have some tea, coffee and a few snacks afterwards, so we can have a chat, get to know each other and you can ask any questions you might have. ☕️😊

This is for anyone already joining our next 5-week taster, but also anyone who has been thinking about joining and is still a little hesitant or unsure.

Complete beginners are absolutely welcome. 😊

⏰ 10:30–11:30am

Just send me a message if you’d like to come along and I’ll save you a place. 😊

A little bit later than planned, but I’m really happy to say that we are finally ready to welcome some new faces into our 60+ Functional Training community.😊

We are opening another 5-week taster block starting the week of 12th October, with spaces available in both our Monday & Thursday and Tuesday & Friday groups.

When I first started these sessions, I wanted to create something specifically for people over 60 where they can come and work on their strength, fitness, balance and mobility, but also feel comfortable and supported, especially if they have never stepped into a gym before.

And over the last few months it has become so much more than just the training. ❤️

I love watching our members getting stronger, becoming more confident, trying things they never thought they could do and also seeing the friendships and little community growing. And we are just about start a step challange together 🤩🚶‍♀️

Most of our members had never done strength training before joining us, and our current members are in their 60s, 70s and beyond. 😊 So please don’t think you need to be fit, experienced or a certain age to start. We meet you where you’re at, and everything can be adapted to your own ability.

Our introductory taster is £50 for 5 weeks, which includes 2 fully coached sessions every week – 10 sessions altogether. There is absolutely no commitment to continue afterwards. It gives you the chance to come along, experience the sessions and decide if it’s something you would like to carry on with. 😊

📅 Monday & Thursday 10:30–11:30am
OR
📅 Tuesday & Friday 10:30–11:30am

Starting the week of 12th October.

Have a little look through the photos for more information about what we do. 😊

And if you’ve been thinking about joining us but have been a little hesitant, just drop me a message. I’m always more than happy to have a chat, answer any questions and help you decide if it’s right for you. ❤️

A little introduction to our new trainee coach, Alisha ❤️

After looking for someone to come on board and help with the growing business to take some pressure off my shoulders I’m really happy to give Alisha the opportunity to join us as a trainee coach. 🙂

Some of you will already know her because she used to be one of our members. While she was completing her PT qualification, we also helped her with some of the practical assessments she needed to complete, including filming group coaching sessions.

Alisha is a mum of two, loves running and strength training, and she always been one of our “crazy” members who is always up for a challenge to push herself and others around her. 😄❤️💪

She has already helped us kick off our first running club, and I’m really looking forward to having her around more, learning, growing and getting involved more and more in our community.

Here’s a little introduction from Alisha herself:

“Hi, I’m Alisha, a qualified PT and mum of 2 wild redheads! My background is in the corporate world where I have trained, coached and mentored people for 20 years.

Over the last couple of years, I was a member of Infinity Coaching and it was here that I became the strongest and fittest I had been in my life. This inspired me to finally complete a PT course and pushed me into training at a level I never thought was possible for ‘normal’ people.

I’m so excited for this opportunity to learn and grow with you all ❤️”

Please welcome Alisha and give her a warm welcome. ☺️

A huge well done to some of our members who completed the Edinburgh Kiltwalk yesterday. ❤️👏

A special well done to Andrew from our 60+ Functional Training group, who completed the full 21 miles with his daughter to raise funds for Srathcarron Hospice 💪

He even said afterwards that he felt wonderful and is planning to come to class today… which made me laugh. 😂

So proud of everyone who took part.

Hopefully managed to rest your feet up a bit. 🙂
Make sure you recover well and enjoy a bit of rest.

It’s making me excited already for getting our members together for Glasgow Kiltwalk next year 🙂🤩

Another 5-week training block done. ❤️

Today was the final session of our second 5-week programming with some of our 60+ Functional Training members.

We challenged ourselves a little bit today and did some testing to see how much progress everyone has made over the past five weeks.

And honestly, I was amazed watching everyone. 🤩

It was amazing to see their confidence grow, their strength improve, and to hear all the stories about the positive changes they’ve noticed in everyday life.

It has been a pleasure working with everyone. We lifted weights, played games, and had plenty of laughs as well. Honestly, never a dull moment in our sessions. 😅

Can't wait to share some of the fantastic progress we've made over the next few days. We will also be opening up a few spaces for some new people to join us through to our next 5-week introductory block.

More info and details are coming soon. 👀

Excited to see our 60+ community growing 🌱❤️

Meet Giuliana ❤️

Just over a month ago, Giuliana came along to try one of our classes after being recommended to us by her son’s partner, who is already one of our members.

Since then, she has been coming twice a week to our 6:15am Circuit classes. And this morning, after class, I just had a little chat with her, asking how she’s getting on and whether she has noticed any changes.

Oh my goodness… my heart. 🥹

She told me she feels completely different.

When she first started, she was experiencing pain in her legs which was even affecting her sleep. She often felt tired and exhausted. She felt like she just wanted to sit on the sofa.

Now she told me the pain has gone, she’s sleeping better, she has much more energy and she just feels better in herself.

And I can see the changes in the gym too. She’s moving so much more comfortably, lifting heavier weights, doing lunges and becoming more confident every week. 💪

But the part that touched me most was seeing the joy in her eyes while she was explaining all the changes she has experienced.

She said:

“I didn’t come here to change my body. I just wanted to feel better.”

And now she feels happier. ☺️

Giuliana runs a business, she’s a mum, a grandmother and has a big family around her. She spends so much of her time looking after and helping other people.

She told me that coming here is her time.

That’s why she gets up at 5am to come to class.

And this is exactly why we train.

Not just to change how our body looks.

We train for longevity, to support our everyday life, to feel stronger, fitter and more capable. And therefore have more energy to spend time with the people and things we love.❤️

And sometimes, simply to feel happier in our own body.

I’m so proud of your progress already, Giuliana. 👏👏 And we’re only getting started. 💪

This is the kind of thing that makes me happy as a coach. ❤️🙏
