The question you could be asking yourself is: "On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do I feel I'm pushing myself during physical activity?"
Or in other words: What is my RPE (rate of perceived exertion) for the given activity?
The answer can be subjective and your own judgment.
To grasp an idea, take a look at the chart pictured in this post. Another helpful way to gauge your exertion is to estimate how many reps were left in reserve after a set stops.
Think of a recent working set in the latest workout. During that set, was it an effective 8 or 9, or are you underestimating?
In the clip, I explain how this useful technique can help you choose the weight for your set and explain when to add weight to your lifts to progress in strength.
Lighter workouts have their time and place, but you can make the most of it in the majority of your workouts.

For f*t sake
There's a three-letter f-word you perhaps call and think to yourself. If you can think and know what this is and maybe do so, then please listen up.
Believe it or not, you can estimate the number of calories your body needs to maintain its current weight.
Using the very clever Harris-Benedict equation, it can determine your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR); the number of calories you burn at rest, as if you slept and were awakened day in and day out doing nothing.
It's unlikely you live like a statue, so that result is then multiplied by your supposed weekly activity factor to finally calculate your TDEE (the total amount of calories you're burning in a day).
I've read that calories are estimated to be 2500 for males and 2000 for females, per day.
If that were true, then that TDEE would mean we weigh the same, are all the same age, the same height, and share a similar activity level.
We're not average, but unique.
Again, your daily calorie-maintenance target is only an estimate.
Given time, frequently eating below such an estimated maintenance by 250-500 kcal could keep you in a calorie deficit, eventually causing noticeable weight loss.
This method of dieting in combination with weight training can help with f*t loss and building muscle - a process known as body recomposition.

Go and give it your best.
For the past two years, I've visited the Strathmore Highland Games and each year taken part in the Scottish Stones of Strength, attempting to lift towards 140kg.
This year, I managed one ball after the previous one, which was 90kg.
Everyone likely wants the best result for what they set out to do.
I guess it's only natural to want what's best, and if they don't get the best outcome almost straight away, they may become frustrated or disappointed by not getting a desired result sooner.
If I want to lift heavier stones, I train lifting heavy stones. If I want to lose fat, I train by eating fewer calories so as not to maintain or add body fat.
Don't overlook the power of your current capabilities, and notice that the frequent, in-the-moment steps and actions toward an outcome mean you're being consistent and, over time, moving you closer to what you set out to do.
This doesn't mean settling for second best; understand that meeting your goals takes time. Your long-term goals are never as close as you'd want.
There will be mistakes, imperfections, regret and challenges.
What matters always is showing up, learning, and being patient; this is what it means to develop. Remember this from now onwards: your effort and continuity are what always matter.
