I am delighted to endorse Ella McCabe as the best candidate to be your SRC President. I have the pleasure of working closely with Ella through the cross-campus Welfare Forum this year and I know that she will continue to advocate for every student on campus should she be elected as President. In particular, her stance expressed in Hustings yesterday about protecting the University Block Grant is so important in maintaining the funding streams for GUSA from the University and there is no other candidate to better represent the interests of all four student bodies.

Her Manifesto can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/Vote-Ella-McCabe-1-SRC-President-142265337727670/photos/pcb.153937113227159/153936289893908/

Team,

I am delighted to announce that after the close of nominations on Wednesday that I am running unopposed for the role of Welfare Convenor. Thank you all so much for your support throughout the nomination process. However, Welfare never ends and I’m committed to using the rest of this Election Period and Hustings to share with you all some of my key manifesto points and why I’m so excited about Welfare in 2020/21. In addition there remains elections for key posts both in GUSA and within the other student bodies and I would urge that all of you take time to read each of the manifestos and get engaged with the election of the individuals who are going on to represent you. Once again thank you so much for your support.

My Manifesto:

In addition to committing to the expansion and promotion of existing excellent initiatives within GUSA Welfare including but not limited to the Studio One Safe Space, GUSA Gym Buddies, Take a Break Week, and GUSA’s partnership with the Linda Tremble Foundation (LTF) as your GUSA Welfare convenor for the 2020/21 Academic Year I would set goals within each of the following three areas that I believe are attainable during my time in the post:

Making Sport Accessible to All - I believe that every student on campus should feel welcome and comfortable within all of GUSA’s sports clubs and within the University of Glasgow’s sporting facilities. In order to widen participation in sports, I would seek to meet with the Disabled Student Network alongside the Disability Equality Officer regularly to help guide and structure initiatives with the aim of widening participation in sport for all students across campus. Alongside this I would propose that GUSA maintains it’s close ties with this Charity of the year Scottish Disability Sport with the aim of potentially drawing from SDS’s expertise to host training opportunities for potential gym buddies or welfare officers within clubs who have a passion for broadening student representation and promoting a sporting culture that is accessible for every student. Furthermore I would like to campaign to raise awareness of recreational sport and drop in sessions that occur regularly on campus. In addition to this, I would raise awareness of Safe Space and the Gym Buddy system through a GUSA Welfare Stand at the Fresher’s Fayre and at the Sports Fayre bringing together experienced buddies with first-time gym-goers who can share their positive experiences of these initiatives and sport on campus.

Breaking down Barriers to discussing Mental Health - I would seek to open up the conversation regarding mental health through a coordinated use of social-media to promote “Self-Care Sundays,” an informative resource designed to raise awareness of the conversation regarding Mental Wellbeing on campus and to signpost students to relevant resources and services within the University should they feel the need to reach out and seek help. Furthermore, I would seek to organise events similar to ‘Broga’ and ‘500 Miles for Mental Health’ to engage student’s on campus in the promotion of positive mental wellbeing, with a particular emphasis on coordinating a series of campus wide Movember events with an aim to raise awareness of the importance of male mental health.

Club Welfare Collaboration - By promoting methods in which clubs may develop the recreational side of their sport alongside a publicity campaign highlighting drop in sport sessions I believe that participation can be increased at every level of university sport. In addition I would seek to support Welfare Officers and Club CTS from the perspective that each sport has its own unique concerns. In doing so I hope to be able to provide a more representative view of sport welfare and design a welfare platform that accommodates the needs of as many clubs as possible. Furthermore, I will arrange office hours which will be open to all Club Welfare Officers and Gym Buddies on a drop-in basis to come and discuss any events or initiatives that they have planned within their club, or help support and guide officers towards specific resources and services should have concerns or questions about Welfare within their clubs. Finally to increases collaboration between clubs and increase the connections between Club Welfare Officers I would seek to convene an early semester meeting with Club Captains and Welfare Officers and take them through the best practices document created last year to provide guidelines for Welfare within clubs and the role and remit of the Welfare Officer. Alongside this I would poll Welfare officers on what training they believe would best assist them in their role alongside encouraging a culture of bringing along freshers or other students starting University to ensure continuity for Club Welfare alongside setting aside Gym buddy training sessions for Welfare Officers who would be keen to increase participation in areas such as strength and conditioning within their club with the particular aim of supporting club sport members who prior to University may have had only a limited experience of the gym.

Thank you to all who are reading this and if you have any further questions please message me or feel free to bring them to Hustings,

Ewan

Hey Team,

Just wrote this post to give any of you who may not already know me an introduction to who I am and a wee bit of a insight into my experience with sport, GUSA, and welfare on campus

Starting off with a little bit about me. I’m Glasgow born and bred and grew up on the south side of the city and have had a real love for sport ever since discovering a passion for cross-country running just before starting high school. As a child, my dyspraxia (a coordination and balance disorder) certainly impacted my ability to catch, kick and throw balls but it never hindered my love for sport and exercise and to this day I can never say no to an impromptu game of 5-a-side. This love continued throughout high school where I developed my skill and abilities in the criminally underrated sport that is Volleyball and I’ve continued to play competitive Volleyball alongside my degree in English Literature. I’ve always been so lucky to have had access to coaches and team captains who have always opened doors to my participation in sport and as a result making sport accessible for all is an initiative that I’ve become passionate about and want to see expanded upon should I be elected as your Welfare Convenor.

Participating in sport and becoming an active member of Glasgow’s sporting community has been one of the most influential decisions that I’ve made during my time at University. Through Volleyball I’ve had the real privilege to serve as Social Secretary and assist the Welfare officer in promoting physical and mental wellbeing across the club. Furthermore I played an extremely active role in the merger of of the Men’s’s and Women’s Volleyball Clubs into the united GUVC in an attempt to open participation in volleyball to as many individuals as possible and increase cross-club relations and support. Within the wider sporting community at Glasgow I was incredibly lucky to be part of the amazing GUSA Fresher’s Week team that took campus by storm in September 2019. In our 14 days of training, moving Freshers in, and promoting sport across Campus I had incredible insight into the positive role that sport and fitness plays on campus and in the Welfare of all students from 1st year through to PHD. In addition, I had fantastic opportunity to meet many individuals from across all of GUSA’s different clubs and committees and build genuine friendships with people to whom I can look to and ask for their their perspective on Welfare on campus and how they would like GUSA to help support Welfare at the level of each individual club.

This year I’ve had the privilege of being on Welfare committee alongside so many talented and motivated individuals who were keen to invest in their time, efforts and expertise into running events to bring attention to campus Welfare and raise awareness of the services available at the university which seek to promote mental and physical wellbeing for all students. I have had an incredible time helping put on cross-campus events such as 'Take a Break’ week alongside participating in events such as ‘Broga’ and the recent ‘500 Miles for Mental Health’ and it has given me a real in depth perspective of the role that GUSA plays in campus wide welfare alongside the specific events that GUSA has promoted to support student well-being. In addition I have had the incredible opportunity to be a GUSA gym buddy and an active participant in the Studio One Safe Space initiative which has given me the practical skills and passion necessary to help make sport and exercise more accessible at a student by student level. I have a real passion for these initiatives as they allows for me to get to know my other students on a personal level and it keeps me motivated to look after my own personal physical and mental wellbeing. Finally I have been actively looking at training opportunities to help improve my individual knowledge of Welfare on campus. This has included passing the University wide ‘Equality and Diversity Monitoring’ online course alongside my participation in training delivered by Stonewall for promoting LGBT inclusion and participation in sport, ‘Mind your Mate’ training and “Let’s talk about sexual violence’ training. As your Potential Welfare convenor I would actively seek out new training opportunities for both myself and the Welfare officers / CTS in clubs across campus alongside promoting and expanding upon the events and accessibility initiatives that I have personally seen raise awareness across the whole of Campus.

Thanks all for reading this and if you have any other ideas or questions for me feel free to fire a message at me,

Ewan
