On this day, 6th September 1935

A plaque on the wall of a community centre in East Lothian marks an important date in Rangers' history. It was on this day in the village of Wallyford that Jock Wallace was born, often making the trip from his home as a young boy to go and watch Rangers when they visited Edinburgh. As well as the plaque in his home village, there are also two roads named after the former Rangers boss in his home village: Wallace Avenue and Wallace Crescent.

Jimmy Phillips had a brief career with Rangers, playing as a full back after signing from Bolton Wanderers in March 1987.

Tenure and Position

Joined Rangers on 20 March 1987 from Bolton Wanderers as a full back.

His spell at Rangers lasted until August 1988.

Appearances and Performance

Made 25 appearances for Rangers, including 19 league matches and 6 as a substitute, but did not score any goals during his stay.

Appeared in four League Cup matches for the club.

Historical Context

Phillips’ time at Rangers was relatively short, after which he moved on to Oxford United in August 1988.

His career is noted for lengthier spells at Bolton Wanderers and Middlesbrough, but his Rangers period helped establish him as a solid defender.

Phillips is remembered as a dependable English full back during late-1980s Scottish football, though goals were not a feature of his spell at Rangers.

On This Day – 6 September 1958

The Old Firm was rocking back in ’58 as Rangers and Celtic fought out a 2–2 draw at Parkhead in front of 50,000 fans.

Celtic struck first through Bobby Collins after 28 minutes, but the ever-reliable Johnny Hubbard stepped up from the spot before half-time to drag Rangers level at 1–1.

Into the second half, Eric Smith put Celtic back in front on 63 minutes – but this Gers side weren’t going down easy. With 15 minutes left on the clock, Ralph Brand smashed home the equaliser and sent the Rangers end wild.

The match was classic Old Firm – tough tackles, fierce battles all over the park, and both sides refusing to give an inch. A proper blood-and-thunder Glasgow derby where Rangers showed the fight and spirit that’s in our DNA.

Final score: Celtic 2–2 Rangers. Another chapter in the story of the world’s greatest derby. 🔵⚪🔴

Rino Gattuso arrived at Rangers in 1997, just 19 years old. 🇮🇹💙

He wasn’t the biggest player, but he played like a man twice his size. Fearless, relentless and never afraid to put a boot in. 40 appearances, four goals and a reputation as one of the most combative young midfielders at Ibrox. His first Rangers goal came against Strasbourg in the UEFA Cup. 🔥

But Gattuso wasn’t just a player who passed through. He fell in love with Rangers, Glasgow and the Old Firm.

“I loved my time at Rangers.”

And when he left, he admitted he felt he had unfinished business with the fans, saying he was “forced to flee almost like some sort of thief” and that he owed Rangers supporters a debt. (Sky Sports)

Then there was Gazza. 😂

Paul Gascoigne took the teenage Rino to one of Glasgow’s finest tailors and told him Rangers had a deal. Gattuso picked seven or eight suits, shirts and ties — the bill came to around £10,000.

The catch? There was no deal.

Gazza had simply tricked him into letting him pay for everything himself. 😂❤️ A classic Gazza prank with a genuinely brilliant gesture behind it. Gattuso never forgot it. (FourFourTwo)

From a teenager at Ibrox to a World Cup winner, two-time Champions League winner and AC Milan legend — the warrior was forged in Glasgow.

Short spell. Massive impact. Rangers man forever.
