Have you ever told a patient they have “wear and tear”, “degeneration” or an “unstable” joint?

The words we use to explain injuries and conditions can influence how patients understand their body, how worried they feel and even how confident they are about movement and rehabilitation.

In this month’s SST CPD Series, we look at why language matters and how small changes, such as talking about “normal age-related changes” rather than “wear and tear", can help us communicate accurately without unintentionally creating fear.

It might also make you think about some of the words you use in your own clinical practice.

For World First Aid Day, we’re sharing SST member Sara Gray’s experience of responding to a cardiac arrest while working at a football training ground.

Sara’s story is a powerful reminder of why emergency care is a core competency for Graduate Sports Therapists, and why having an Emergency Action Plan is only the start.

From regular training and practising EAPs, to knowing where your equipment is and understanding everyone’s role, preparation can make a real difference when an emergency happens.

Sara also talks openly about the emotional impact afterwards, the importance of debriefing and reflection, and how professional bodies can support members before and after serious incidents.

Her advice? “Know your equipment. Know your role.”

This month, Evidence to Practice takes a closer look at Achilles tendinopathy.

We're exploring key areas relevant to clinical practice, including the differences between midportion and insertional Achilles tendinopathy, differential diagnosis, exercise prescription and loading, and the potential influence of psychological factors on rehabilitation.

The evidence also highlights an important message: there isn’t one exercise programme that will be right for everyone. Effective rehabilitation starts with listening to your patient and completing a thorough assessment that is tailored to the individual, their presentation and their goals.

We’d also love to hear from our members. Is there a topic you’d like us to explore in a future Evidence to Practice? Let us know in the comments.
