Harrogate Railway Reserves 3–7 Goole Women FC
Goole Women FC got their new Division 2 campaign off to a winning start with an entertaining 7–3 victory away at Harrogate Railway Reserves.
As has become customary, Goole came flying out of the traps and established a commanding lead early on, racing into a 5–0 advantage within the opening 35 minutes. Kirstie Nicholls led the charge with a first-half hat-trick, while Ellie Sutton and Rachel Cross-Cawston also found the net to put Goole firmly in control.
However, Goole took their foot off the gas during the final 10 minutes of the first half, allowing Harrogate back into the contest. The hosts capitalised by scoring twice before the break, leaving Goole with a 5–2 lead at half time.
The second half proved to be a much more even affair, with tired legs beginning to show and rotation from the bench becoming important. Harrogate scored the first goal after the restart, reducing the deficit to 5–3 and making things a little nervy with half an hour still to play.
Goole responded in the best possible fashion, though, as Nicholls and Sutton struck in quick succession around the 70-minute mark to put the game beyond doubt and secure all three points.
There will always be things to work on following any match, but overall it was a good day at the office for Goole. After a summer away from competitive football, getting back to winning ways was the perfect way to begin the new campaign.
A special mention also goes to new signings Leeman and Bodycombe, who both made their club debuts and put in encouraging performances.
A positive start to life in Division 2.
