Lucy Beal, who signed for the Solent Junior Devils NIHL2 team for the 2020/21 season, is off to the USA to continue her hockey journey.

Despite being only 18 years old, Lucy who is the younger sister of ex-Devil Chris ‘Beano’ Beal, has an impressive level of experience. She has iced for GB U18s in 20 World Championship games and the GB Women in 5 world championship games, picking up a silver and bronze medal in the process. Her proudest moment was when she was selected as GB’s most valuable player in the 2020 U18s World Championship.

In June this year Lucy was approached by Hoosac School in New York State, USA to join the school and play in their Owls ice hockey team.

Lucy started playing at the age of 4 and went through the conference and England programmes before being selected for GB U18s in 2017. Lucy has also been a member of the multiple championship-winning Queen Bees and played NIHL2 at Bracknell before the rink closed.

Speaking about her move to the USA Lucy said “I have always dreamt of playing abroad and was thrilled when I was approached to play at Hoosac School. I would like to thank my coaches that have got me to this stage and am really excited about the new challenges ahead. Hopefully, I can help raise awareness of Great Britain in the hockey world and show that with work and determination dreams really can come true”

RETURN TO PLAY: following the Prime Minister's announcement on a roadmap out of lockdown there were positive signs for indoor sports to be allowed back in April and May.

As with all return to play protocols we expect to receive full details from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) in the coming days and this will be shared with all parties along with plans for returning our teams and athletes to the ice safely.

TIER 4 UPDATE | Venues have continued to provide information that they believe allows them to operate in Tier 4 areas as we have been working with British Ice Skating and the Ice Rink Managers Association to resolve the query raised by venues with government and other NGBs. Following the query being raised there has been consistent dialogue with these key partners over the last 48 hours to resolve and we thank them for their engagement over the Christmas period.

There is no change to the position in Tier 4 whereby there is no general exemption to allow for the participation of indoor sports in either the legal text or in the guidance issued by government and as such the sport cannot take place as previously outlined.

The legislation states:
(6) Regulation 16(1) does not prevent the use of
(f) indoor gyms, fitness studios, skating rinks, indoor sports facilities and other indoor leisure centres for supervised activities for children;

In addition, the legislation also states:
(18) Exception 13 is that the gathering is reasonably necessary—
(e) for the purposes of—
(i) childcare provided by a person registered under Part 3 of the Childcare Act 2006, or
(ii) supervised activities for children or other persons who were under the age of 18 on 31st August 2020;
(19) Sub-paragraph (18)(e)(ii) only applies where the supervised activities are reasonably necessary to enable a parent, or a person who has parental responsibility for, or care of, the child or other person in question—
(a) to work or search for work,
(b) to undertake training or education, or
(c) to attend a medical appointment or address a medical need.

Whilst the first statement viewed in isolation does appear to show that venues can operate, which is factually correct, the provision of services is limited in scope based on the other statements and therefore precludes the ability of venues to offer general services under the provision of supervised activities of children. This has been confirmed by other NGBs and DCMS and we will work with our partners at the Ice Rink Managers Association to see what if any activities our sports deliver meet these criteria and amend our guidance appropriately.

TIER 4 UPDATE | Some venues have cited information that they believe allows them to operate in Tier 4 areas.

It has been made clear to governing bodies that in tier 4 areas, indoor team sport for under-18s can't take place, unless it's for educational purposes, or to facilitate childcare that enables parents or carers to work, seek work or to take part in education.

A person also shouldn’t leave a tier 4 area for sport and physical activity purposes (this includes under-18s and disabled people) and people shouldn't travel into stay at home (tier 4) alert areas.

As such, unless there is a further update in guidance from DCMS or Sport England, we are unable to sanction any activities to take place in Tier 4 areas as required under guidance for all team sports.

19/12/2020

English Ice Hockey Association

TIER 4 UPDATE | Following the Prime Minister’s broadcast earlier, government advice has been updated for new Tier 4 areas. Ice rinks are to be closed but those with ‘elite sport’ status can continue behind closed doors.

All other indoor team sport in Tier 4 is not permitted.

#ReturnToPlay: Good luck to Nottingham Ice Hockey Club and Sheffield Ice Hockey Academy who are staging junior pilot games this weekend. Saturday will see three games in Nottingham, with four games hosted on Sunday at Ice Sheffield.

Due to current restrictions there will be only 1 parent per child in the rink, but all games will be shown on the clubs' respective YouTube channels. Look out on EIHA and club social media across the weekend for the links.

The schedule is shown in the attached graphic.

Thanks to the volunteers at both clubs, staff in both venues and the parents and players working together to stage these games.

Good luck to both clubs and all players taking part!

RETURN TO PLAY: The English Ice Hockey Association are pleased to publish their Return To Play document which comes into effect from 00.01 on Wednesday December 2 as government restrictions in England revert to the three-tier structure.

At time of writing, some two hours before the rules come into effect, we have not received formal clarification from DCMS and Sport England. Therefore this guidance is our interpretation of the Three Tier rulings and is subject to official confirmation from government.

English Ice Hockey Association

The English Ice Hockey Association is extremely grateful to everyone who has lobbied their MP and sent messages of support as ourselves and other ice sports campaigned for rinks in Tier 3 regions to remain open for sport.

We are pleased to say that the government have listened to those messages and have made a concession to the rules in Tier 3, allowing rinks to be open for elite athletes, professional dancers and choreographers, people with a disability, supervised activities for children and for formal education or training purposes.

This means many of our teams will be able to return to the ice when the new tiered restrictions come into effect at 00.01 on Wednesday December 2nd.

We have drafted our full Return to Play document for all three Tiers and for all areas of our sport and this is with Sport England to be signed off. If approved then there is a pathway for training to resume immediately, followed by pilot games, pre-season games and a formal competitive season starting in January 2021.

As soon as the information has been given the official green light we will publish this on our website and social media channels.

English Ice Hockey Association

Ice Rink Managers Association, British Ice Skating and English Ice Hockey Association, along with other sports, have been waiting for more than a week for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to issue its latest guidance following the announcement that the second national lockdown will end on Tuesday 1st December.

As regions in England enter different tiers these vital, specific updates have still not been published. This means that we have been left to interpret the rules, rather than be guided by government.

British Ice Skating and EIHA have produced initial guidance relating to ice sports in tiers 1, 2 and 3.

British Ice Skating guidance can be found online and EIHA will send their guidance to club representatives.

As there are variances on the interpretation regarding “supervised activities for children” in tier 3 some rinks may open based on their interpretation of the legislation. However, until an official response is received from DCMS both NGBs can only offer an initial interpretation that is subject to government approval.

We will share the official final response from DCMS when we receive this.

30/11/2020

English Ice Hockey Association

We have received updated guidance from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport regarding the rules that will be in place for ice rinks in tier three from Wednesday 2nd December.

We will be working through the evening and into tomorrow examining the regulations to make sure the clearest update can be provided. There are many details to digest and appreciate your patience as we figure out how the new rules will work in practice.

This update comes after a sustained lobbying campaign by representatives from British Ice Skating, English Ice Hockey Association & the Ice Rink Managers Association.

We will provide more information tomorrow.
