Pleased that Pelham Safety Services had a very good audit for Category A and B asbestos training last week, in order to keep these categories approved by IATP
We can provide Asbestos Awareness Training ( Category A Training) for anyone who may come across asbestos through their work.
We also conduct courses for companies and individuals who wish to remove low risk asbestos items that do not require a licence, in a safe manner that is compliant with current legislation. This is Category B training ( Non-Licensed Work With Asbestos).

This was found in a school during one of our surveys last week. It is a civilian gas mask dated 1939 and was being used to teach primary aged children about WWII ( part of the curriculum).
Unfortunately, what the staff didn't know is that these gas masks contain a filter made from blue asbestos. Combine that with the fact that it is 76 years old and it is quite scary that children as young as five have been trying it on.
If your child is at primary school or you are a primary school teacher, please check that the school isn't using one if these as a teaching aid. These cannot be made safe so don't let anyone tell you it has been.
This one has now been disposed of as the hazardous waste it is.
We may yet get legislation to eradicate asbestos in the UK.
The supply and use of asbestos was prohibited in the UK in 1999. However, there are millions of Tonnes of the stuff still in buildings including homes, schools, shops, hospitals and offices.
As long as asbestos is present in buildings it poses a risk. Current legislation is based on asbestos present in buildings being managed to reduce the risk. However it only applies to non-domestic properties. Homes are specifically excluded from the requirements for surveys and management plans. These means that homeowners, tenants and tradesmen working in those homes that contain asbestos continue to be at risk of asbestos related cancer.
