🚨Patrice Evra on Joshua Zirkzee’s cameo against Tottenham Hotspurs:

“Listen, I was watching Zirkzee come on against Tottenham, and I said to myself, ‘Finally, somebody is taking responsibility in this attack!’
Before the game, I spoke with Ruud van Nistelrooy about Zirkzee. Ruud told me, ‘Patrice, sometimes people judge a player by his name, his price or how many goals he scores. But watch what happens when he gets on the ball.’
And that’s exactly what I saw!
Zirkzee came on, started taking on his man, dribbling into dangerous areas and making things happen. He wasn’t just passing the ball backwards and hiding. He was trying to beat defenders, create something and change the tempo of the game.
The funny thing is, he looked more dangerous in his cameo than the entire front three that started the match!
I turned to Ruud and said, ‘Are you seeing this? Why are we getting more urgency from a substitute than from the players who had the whole game to make their mark?’
Ruud smiled and said, ‘That’s what happens when a player comes on with something to prove. He doesn’t have time to settle into the game. He has to make his presence felt immediately.’
And Ruud was right.
I am not saying Zirkzee is perfect, and I am not saying one cameo solves all Manchester United’s problems. But when you come on and beat your man, carry the ball forward and make defenders uncomfortable, you deserve credit.
My problem is this: if Zirkzee can bring that much directness off the bench, why couldn’t the starting attackers give us the same energy?
At Manchester United, you cannot just wear the shirt and expect people to applaud you. You have to make things happen. And against Tottenham, Zirkzee did more than simply come on to help the team he gave the fans a reason to sit up and pay attention.”
