The Power of the Rebound Walls (or: I’ve Been Everywhere With These Damn Nets!)
People used to just turn up. There was a boom, then the ripple after the boom. My generation.
Then something changed. There are probably lots of reasons, but one of them is simple: visibility. A sport played behind walls, behind some more walls.
We know squash is a great sport. That’s never been in question. But somewhere along the line, we drifted to the back of people’s minds. As a club or venue, it’s simply not enough anymore to sit back and wait for people to walk through the door. It just isn’t happening like it used to.
So this is a call to action: get a rebound wall and get into the heart of your community. Show people what this game is all about. Make it as easy as possible for people to access. Appreciate that not everyone wants to be a member or play for a team. Build some flexibility into your offer.
The nets are a tool for engagement. They’re a way of taking squash to people rather than waiting for people to come to squash. They’re also one of the best ways of giving the sport, and your club greater visibility. I really can’t emphasise that enough.
Why am I banging on about this? Because I’ve spent the last six years out there doing it. On the ground. In parks, schools, community centres, town centres, mosques and just about anywhere else you can think of.
I genuinely believe this is how we should all be thinking if we want squash not just to survive, but to thrive in England.

First post from us in a while! We’re still here and we’re still hitting small rubber balls around a white box, then chasing after them, then hitting them again (you get the point). Weird when you put it like that right?
For those of you that don’t know who we are, hi we’re a Community interest Company that uses squash to bring people together and break down many of the barriers people are facing when accessing sport.
We’ve kickstarted national programmes - like Squash from the Mosque and partnered with loads of ace organisations and funders like England Squash Invictus Wellbeing Community Foundation for Calderdale The National Lottery Community Fund Sport England Active Calderdale and probably loads of others that will now get in touch with me to tell me off for not giving them a mention!
We mainly run sessions at Old Crossleyans Squash Club in Halifax so get in touch if you want to play or get involved in some way.
