So I've got some new books πŸ“– not that I like reading.. I prefer looking at pictures πŸ‹πŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸ˜… but swatting on my squatting and all things training is worth reading about. Improving my understanding of the theory and putting it into practice so I can provide a better service to all my clients in the long term πŸ’ͺ

It's been great being back at the gym this last 6-7 weeks, and its been busier than ever. Everyone bouncing back getting back into it after a long winter. Squat University

Why do some athletes use chains when squatting? There’s two main reasons. The first and most important is to work on bar speed and accelerating through the sticking point of the lift on the ascent.πŸ‹πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ
.
Here’s an example of Heather Murphy who’s max squat is 220 lbs. With the chains attached the barbell in total is loaded to 223 lbs (meaning she is overloading the top portion of her lift). In this video she’s squatting with the bar loaded to 65kg/143lbs with 2 chains per side at 20 lbs each.As she drops into the squat the chain hits the ground which decrease the overall weight pulling down. As she stands up the weight is then reapplied to the barbell.βœ…

This concept called β€œaccommodating resistance” basically means the weight is unloaded in the weakest portion of the lift (the bottom) and adds more weight to the strongest portion of the lift (near the top) – requiring the athlete to work on developing more and more power.πŸ’ͺ🏼

The second reason you can use chains is to work on core stability. As you can see the chains are swinging slightly and not touching the ground as she walks the weight out of the rack. This requires her to contract all of the muscles that surround the core on the front, back and sides of the body to create a tremendous amount of stability. Notice how she sets herself, braces her core and THEN begins her squat.πŸ‘πŸΌ

Squat University

What are the qualities of a good air squat? The first step is to ensure good foot stability by grabbing the ground with your toes. Concentrate on spreading your bodyweight across three points of your foot (creating what is called the tripod foot).βœ…
.
Next, spread the ground underneath you as you drive your knees slightly to the side (some people like the cue β€œscrew the feet into the ground”). This enhances lower body stability and turns on your lateral glutes.βœ…
.
Once your lower body is set correctly, start your squat by hinging at your hips. Keeping your arms in front of you as you squat can keep your back in a good positon. Almost everyone should reach a depth of the hip crease below the tops of the knees. In this position, most will have a fairly inclined chest position in order to stay balanced and keep the bodies center of gravity over the mid foot. This is why slamming someone up against a wall to try and conform to a vertical chest position is not a good teaching method.❌

If you cannot perform this bodyweight air squat with quality movement technique, work on it before moving to barbell lifts as loading poor technique will only lead to injuries down the road.πŸ₯Š

Patellar tendon pain is a common injury to the knee, and today I want to share how this problem occurs, how to know if this is really tendinopathy and the first steps to fixing.
.
Young athletes (under the age of 30) who are involved in sports that include sudden explosive and repetitive movements of the knee are most susceptible to developing an injury at either the quad or patellar tendons. Movements that use the tendons of the knee as a spring (such as a jump) place significantly more load on the tendon than a slower movement like a squat. Historically, this is why sports such as basketball and volleyball that involve a high amount of jumping have such a high incidence of this injury (a reason why this injury is also known as β€œjumper’s knee”).
