Meeting of Minds 2016 01/05/2016

Thank you very much everyone who attended our Meeting of Minds seminar on 23rd April. Special thanks to the senseis who gave their time for free to promote understanding each others' styles in a very enjoyable way. Looking forward to next year's seminar and we'll also share more photos later as we process them.

Hello, firstly I would like to wish you and your families a very Happy New Year!

I am happy to announce that the Meeting of Minds will take place on the 25th of April, at our dojo. (please see below for dojo and contact details). Every year I drive you all mad to attend but this meeting of Senior Dan grades and their students is so important. This meeting does not try to entice Aikidoka away from their present teaching environments or their own very important dedicated styles. It is a way for the Sensei’s to teach and share a small sample of their knowledge with other Aikidoka and all moneys generated will be donated to the Marie Curie Cancer Hospice (Eden Hall ).

For those who do not know me I am Richard Portsmouth, Shihan 7th Dan Budo Arts Master. I will be in attendance to greet you all, but sadly unable to bless you with my teachings. Sadly for me I am unable to train, owing to major surgery on my back, but my critical eye is still working. Come on you Sensei’s and let’s see what you have to offer. If nothing else you will make new friends and have a great day with people who share the same passion. I would like to thank Arundel House for their continued support each year.

Some closing thoughts, In 2015 I will be the ripe old age of 79 years, of which 53 years spent in the Budo Arts and 7 years in support, which is not a bad 60 Years. A lifetime well spent.

Bless you all.
Richard San.

When you first notice the sword that is moving to strike you, if you think of meeting that sword just as it is, your mind will stop at the sword in just that position, your own movements will be undone, and you will be cut down by your opponent.
..
The effort not to stop the mind in just one place - this is discipline. Not stopping the mind is object and essence... Even in moving the mind outside the body, if it is sent in one direction, it will be lacking in nine others. If the mind is not restricted to just one direction, it will be in all ten.

"On his way (to a bout), he passed by a shrine to Hachiman, the god of war, and stopped for a moment to pray for victory. But as he walked up to the altar and was about to shake the gong’s cord to get the god’s attention, he suddenly realized that in ordinary times he had never put faith in the gods and buddhas. To do so now would be wrong. Chagrined, he released the cord and backed away. Why would the gods listen to him now, when he had never relied on them before? In truth, was he to rely on the gods or on himself? Dripping with sweat from embarrassment, he bowed to the shrine in thanks for the revelation and hurried on."

"The Way of a Warrior is based on humanity, love, and sincerity; the heart of martial valor is true bravery, wisdom, love, and friendship. Emphasis on the physical aspects of warriorship is futile, for the power of the body is always limited."
