Uddiyana Bandha Kriya (Abdominal Lock) What’s happening here, anatomically speaking – We exhale fully and then hold the breath out (external breath retention). We then draw the abdominal wall inwards and upwards under the rib cage, creating a hollow abdomen. This creates negative pressure (a vacuum) in the thoracic cavity, which lifts the relaxed diaphragm upwards, drawing the internal organs (stomach, liver, intestines) upwards towards the chest. The abdominal muscles (re**us abdominis and obliques) contract to maintain the lift.
