Rest week in the bag :-)

As I said last week, I was really ready for this rest week, although rest weeks are always an interesting one for me as they are when I do all my benchmark fitness testing.

Check out this video to see how the week went and also to get insight into the tests I do, why I do them and just what the hell decoupling is!

Here we are in week 3 - the first big block of training for 2021 is done, how does the final week look?

Also looking at using data to track your progress AND a little touch on fatigue :-)

As always, if you have any questions please drop them in the comments

When you are starting to become more serious about your triathlon training you will come across a multitude of random letters, terms and acronyms that can be confusing.

Join Michael for a plain English explanation of just what all of these things actually mean :-)

Sunday Funday 😎😎😎😎

As a coach I always advise my long distance triathlon clients that If you are having to do a ‘double weekend’(so long bike and long run) then you should always do the run Saturday and the bike Sunday.

This is because running on tired legs (in training) increases your injury risk substantially.

However, I know there are other coaches who advise the opposite as they feel it conditions the legs for the race day feelings.

What do you guys tend to do?

👍 for run Saturday, bike Sunday
❤️ for bike Saturday, run Sunday

Following on from my goal setting video yesterday, I think it is worth looking at how often you check in on your progress towards your goals.

This is because, depending on the goal, different time scales come into play in terms of seeing progress (and how to make changes if you do not).

Shorter video this time - i'm sure you will be pleased about that :-)

Ok - I have decided that the 5beeps my Garmin gives at the end of the last Zone 5 interval and my 2nd favourite thing 😎😎😂😂

Tough out there this morning, cold weather always makes things that bit harder.

Wattbike intervals to do later this avo - what are you guys up to?

How we all doing then?

Just a heads up that it’s ok to not be ok 👍

This may come in many many different forms....

Let me share a personal insight -

Last year I doubled down on qualifying for Ironman Hawaii.

For those of you who don’t know what they means, to qualify you need to pretty much finish in the top 2 to 3 of your age group in an Ironman race.

It’s a big commitment, which I had been well on the way to when my big race (Ironman UK) got cancelled- that ended the dream for last year.

So roll on to this year and the plan was to go and race Ironman Lanzarote in May - which in Nov/Dec last year looked like a good choice.

Come January and I have found myself back in what I call ‘limbo land’ where I’m trying my best to train and hit every workout BUT always having that thought in the back of my mind that it might be a waste of time.

Now, generally there isn’t much that really affects me - over the years I’ve come through some pretty bad times HOWEVER I am noticing a few things that have started creeping in.

The biggest one being my sleep - at the moment I am waking up and struggling to get back to sleep around 6-7 times a night, which is lagging into the following day and impacting motivation, productivity and training levels.

Not a huge problem but still something that is having an effect.

The key with these issues is to recognise and deal with them as quickly as possible.

So it’s going to be earlier to bed, no screen work after 9pm and reading books from 9-10pm for me going forward.

What things have YOU noticed going on since the world changed and what have YOU done to help make it better??
