You don't need a room full of expensive equipment to train hard. A single kettlebell lets you hit your legs, core, and upper body without ever needing to move from one spot. Doing full-body movements with minimal kit forces you to focus on the actual effort rather than messing about with machine settings or waiting for equipment to free up in a busy gym.
The Lab by Tom Bisson
Not a typical gym. No noise. No mirrors. No ego. Science-led group coaching for people 40+ who want real, lasting strength. Based in Rocket Padel Ilford.
Strong isn’t a size. It’s a standard.
Saturday 1st August 2026 marks a full year of the lab being open, and we're celebrating with our anniversary workouts 🥂
The band will be in the gym providing a live soundtrack for the sessions, and the doors are open if you want to come down to watch the band, and hang out. There will be 2 sessions - 10am & 12pm.
When you’re caught up in the daily routine of running a gym, it's rare to pause and look at what’s been built. But getting ready for tomorrow forces a bit of perspective. The community that's formed in these group sessions over the last twelve months is the real engine behind the place, and watching everyone turn up and push each other every week is easily the best part of the job.
A massive thank you to every single person who trains here and supports the lab. You made this first year a success 💪

Nickelback’s Dark Horse has got me through some of my most intense workouts over the years.
What’s your number one album when you need to lock in?
We don't train just to get good at gym exercises; we do it so we can move sharply and feel light on our feet when we're out doing things we love. Putting that footwork and stability to use on the court at . If your training doesn't translate to moving better in the real world, what is it actually for?
It's easy to just go through the motions and move from A to B without thinking. But real progress comes from the details - like keeping your torso perfectly square and controlling the entire movement. Intent over intensity, every single set.
If you struggle to feel awake or mobile for early workouts, try doing something fun first. Sneaking in an hour of play before lifting means you show up to the weights already warm, fluid, and ready to crush it from the very first set.
You don't need to be the strongest person in the room to get the most out of the session. We care more about the intent behind your movements, far more than the size of the weight. Your program is adjusted to exactly where your body is at today, so you can finish that last set with perfect control.
I always thought I’d missed my chance to play ice hockey, but starting at a much older age showed me that you don't have to be the greatest in the world to love what you're doing. Just start 🏒
