The Lab didn’t start with perfect lighting and a fully kitted-out space.
It started with Tom coaching clients at a rugby club, building sessions around the people in front of him, and working out what The Lab could become one session at a time.
Then came the garage sessions.
Now it’s here, inside Rocket Padel, Ilford.
The space has changed, but the approach hasn’t: smart training, and sessions built around the person doing the work.
The Lab by Tom Bisson
Not a typical gym. No noise. No mirrors. No ego. Science-led group coaching for people 40+ who want real, lasting strength. Based in Rocket Padel Ilford.
Strong isn’t a size. It’s a standard.
It is never too late to reinvent yourself.
Stories like these can feel extreme, but they prove one simple thing: your body is capable of amazing things at any age. None of these people started out as elite athletes - they just chose to try.
Starting a fitness journey can feel a bit scary, but you don't need to run ultra-marathons or break world records. You just have to take the first step for yourself.
Consider this a reminder to give yourself a bit of grace today.
You aren't late. You are right on time.
A training plan is only useful if it still fits the person walking through the door that day.
If someone turns up exhausted from early starts, work, travel, training and barely having time to eat properly, the smart move might be to change the plan completely.
A hard workout has its place, but so does knowing when the better call is to pull back, breathe, eat, reset and leave feeling like showing up was still a good decision.
Good coaching means reading the room, not just running the plan.
A morning run gives you proof that you can do the thing you said you were going to do.
That sounds simple, but it builds confidence. You get out, move your body, stay with the group, and start the day with something already done for yourself.
Do that often enough and it stops feeling like a big effort every time. It just becomes part of how you look after yourself.
People don’t always need to be pushed harder straight away.
Sometimes they need to feel safe enough to try.
A simple exercise. A slower pace. A bit of control. A small win that makes the next one feel possible.
That approach can build a lot of confidence over time, because you’re not guessing what your body can handle. You’re learning it properly, one step at a time.
Farmer’s walks are basically the gym version of refusing to do two trips with the shopping.
That’s why they’re good.
A simple exercise that builds grip, posture and full-body strength you can use outside the gym.
Morning runs are much easier when someone else is expecting you to be there.
You might not feel ready when the alarm goes off, but once you’re out and the group starts moving, the hardest bit is already done.
A few miles, a better head, and the day starts with something you’ve already shown up for.
The people you train around can change how you train.
When everyone in the room is putting the work in, it becomes easier to stop cutting corners. You stay with the set, take the extra rep, and hold yourself to a better standard.
Sprints now come down to a dice roll.
Which means everyone gets about three seconds of hope before finding out what they’ve agreed to.
A 3 feels like a gift.
A 6 feels personal.
Either way, the group still gets it done.
Motivation is a lot easier to find when it isn’t only coming from you.
On the days you’d probably talk yourself out of training, someone else turning up can be enough to get you through the door.
Once you’re there, the session has its own momentum. You lift, rest, laugh a bit, get back to it, and suddenly the thing you nearly skipped is done.
That’s why training together works so well.
