NSL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH RESULT & REPORT

UPTON FC 4
WEEKLEY ROVERS TITANS 5

A hard fought win for the Titans in their first NSL Championship match away at Heyford FC.

This was a thrilling game played at a high tempo with plenty of end to end action throughout. All the players coping with driving rain at times but sultry temperatures throughout.

Titans settled well and began to take a hold of proceedings early on with plenty of attacking intent and use of pitch width from the forwards and the first goal came from a George Wittering corner as Ash Bedford powered his shot home from inside the box on 9 minutes as the home defence failed to clear.

Corners were a cause of concern for the home side throughout and Titans second goal came on 25 minutes as George Wittering this time provided the headed finish to an inswinging delivery from Tom Nixon.

The Titans advantage was increased further as skipper Joe Pringle netted his shot from 8 yards out after neat build up from Dan Baird (32 minutes).

Upton pegged a goal back soon after to reduce the arrears.

1-3 Half Time

Titans seemingly took complete control as Seb Steward picked the ball up from Alfie Davidson on the left and shot clinically inside the foot of the right post immediately following the restart. With goal five coming on 56 minutes as a defender was forced into putting the ball past his own keeper under pressure from Titans players.

At that point in the match the result seemed beyond doubt but Upton deserve massive credit for their never say die attitude and belief as they launched an impressive comeback and dominated the later stages using their experience and height advantage to great effect. Upton scored on 58,75 and 76 minutes, with clear penalty cases for Titans ignored during this period of the match causing frustration in the Titans’ ranks and when a penalty was finally awarded later on the home keeper saved well to his left.

Regaining their composure Titans saw the game out for what ended up a narrow victory they just about shaded.

The lads will benefit from such a well contested encounter played in a great spirit by both sides, and will be better for the experience.

We thank Upton for their hospitality and the part they played in the game and wish them all the best for their season ahead.

MotM - Connor Quinlivan: cool under pressure, solid in the tackle, great positional sense at the back.

NENE SUNDAY LEAGUE RESULT …

WEEKLEY ROVERS TITANS 13
DENTON UNITED 1

Titans started this First Round cup tie fast out of the blocks and put the Denton goal under immediate pressure racing into a four goal lead within 8 minutes courtesy of excellent finishing from George Wittering for the first, followed up by two clinical individual Marley Manser finishes and rounded off by Danny Hale - Marley and Danny chalking up their first competitive goals in Titans colours.

In this opening period the Denton goalkeeper took a ball straight into the face from close range on the line and suffered an injury that brought his part in the game to an end. We hope he is ok.

Thereafter Titans effectively secured the result with further first half goals from Man of the Match Dan Baird scoring from the edge of the box from a Marley Manser assist.

At this point in proceedings another serious but accidental injury was suffered by the away side with their forward player colliding at a high ball with Connor O’Hagan the Titans keeper, suffering a nasty facial injury, treated by both trainers, and having to be taken off to hospital.

Titans secured goal six on 33 minutes as Connor Quinlivan slid in at a corner and a defensive lapse then saw Denton hit the back of the net for their only goal of the contest.

There was still time for Titans to further extend their lead on 42 minutes as a misdirected clearance fell to Dan Baird who rammed home the second of his brace.

Half time score 7-1 Titans.

The second half saw Titans again fast into their work with the impressive Dino Di Salvo showing great vision for a pass, providing a perfect ball through for Fraser Manley to score from a tight wide angle (48’).
Within three minutes 8 be became 9 as Fraser and Marley exchanged passes to great effect leading to another quality finish from Fraser Manley.

On 57 minutes Dan Baird provided the assist for last season’s Golden Boot winner Tom Nixon to prod home goal 10 from close range.

It then took until the later stages for Titans to again pressure the Denton goal with Marley Manser converting a Dino Di Salvo assist,
followed by very late goals from Tom Nixon (assisted by Alfie Davidson) for his brace (86mins) for 12-1, and Fraser Manley (90’) setting up Marley Manser for his fourth of the day to close the match out.

Titans were very good value for their win in a match they dominated throughout.

Thanks to Denton - we wish them all the best for their season.
Everyone at Titans wishes the injured Denton players well and we hope for speedy recoveries.

Man of the Match:
Dan Baird - a live-wire throughout in midfield on his return capped by two goals.
