Meet the Hammerhead Shark, an unmistakable group of sharks from the family Sphyrnidae, found in warm coastal waters around the world.

Their unusual hammer-shaped head is known as a cephalofoil. Far from being just for show, it gives them a wider field of vision and spreads their sensory organs across a larger area, helping them detect movement and electrical signals hidden beneath the sand. 🔨

🐟 Hammerheads feed on fish, squid, crustaceans and even other sharks. Stingrays are a particular favourite, and their wide heads can help pin rays against the seabed while they take a bite.

They can be found around coral reefs, coastlines and open ocean habitats. While many sharks are solitary, some hammerhead species gather in spectacular schools containing dozens or even hundreds of individuals.

Size varies greatly between species, but the Great Hammerhead is the largest and can grow to around six metres long. Look out for the tall dorsal fin, streamlined body and, of course, that instantly recognisable head. 🌊

Despite their intimidating appearance, Hammerheads are generally cautious around divers. Sadly, many species face serious threats from fishing and the shark fin trade, making their protection incredibly important.

Meet the Archerfish, nature’s underwater sharpshooter and a fish with one of the most impressive hunting techniques in the animal kingdom.

🌿 Where do they live?
Archerfish are found across South and Southeast Asia, northern Australia and parts of the Indo-Pacific. Different species inhabit freshwater rivers, slow-moving streams, mangrove forests and brackish estuaries.

They usually remain close to the surface beneath overhanging branches, where their next meal might be resting on a leaf.

💦 How do they hunt?
Instead of waiting for an insect to fall into the water, an Archerfish shoots it down.

The fish raises its mouth to the surface, forms a narrow channel using its tongue and the roof of its mouth, then forces out a powerful jet of water. If the shot hits its target, the insect falls from the branch and the Archerfish rushes forward to claim its meal.

👀 How accurate are they?
Some Archerfish can hit targets around 1.5 metres away. Even more impressively, they can compensate for refraction, the way light bends as it travels between air and water.

This means the insect is not exactly where it appears to be from beneath the surface. The Archerfish must judge the distortion, distance and angle before taking its shot.

🐜 What do they eat?
Their diet includes insects, spiders, small crustaceans and smaller fish. They may also eat floating plant material, depending on the species and habitat.

📏 How big do they get?
Size varies between species. Many grow to around 12 to 20cm long, although some species can become considerably larger.

✨ Fun fact:
Young Archerfish are not born as perfect marksmen. Their accuracy improves with time and experience, so even a fish needs to practise before it can hit the bullseye.
