"Self image sets the boundaries of individual accomplishment '– Maxwell Maltz

Sometimes we aren’t aware of our self image, yet it influences so much of our lives. The way we talk, the way we look, the way we love, behave, dream.

We can often have two images, the one we show to everyone, and the one we hold inside.

And it’s the one we hold inside that effects the way our life plays out, the success we create, the happiness we experience. And if this is negative, it can become our own limit, our sealing on our lives

Because sometimes, without us being fully aware of it, we let the negative stories we carry around mould our self-image and the potential we set for our lives. Meaning we can discount what is brilliant about us, meaning we can play small and not fully believe in ourselves

The good news is, we can choose to change this.

To rewrite the image we hold for ourselves, and be the person we want and deserve to be

Creating a self image which is empowering, which allows us to see our brilliance and breakdown the invisible barriers we set out for ourselves about the type of person we are and what we can achieve

I have worked with and now coach so many women who are brilliant but do not always realise or remember it

They are often so much better than the men around them, but the men got promoted over them.

Why? Because biases still permeate in many ways across business

BUT women also carry with them these negative beliefs, stories and paradigms. Beliefs which they have been conditioned with and which hold them back

The voices telling us we are perhaps not quite as good. Telling ourselves we don’t feel 100% ready. Doubting our value and worth.

Worrying about how we are perceived, promoting ourselves too much, not being liked. Fear of putting ourselves out there, of failing, of what people might think.

Whilst the men around us are more likely to be asking for what they want and sharing how good they are far and wide

We can look at career growth all day look, but the biggest jump we will ever take is from shifting the relationship we have with ourselves and the belief we need to build in our value and worth.

⚡Learning to trust and believe in ourselves and our talent

⚡ to ask for what we want

⚡ to shout about ourselves loudly

⚡To take action despite the fears and know that confidence is a result not a requirement

⚡To create a vision for what we want and start creating based on what's aligned with us and our values

⚡To see the 99% of things we do amazingly and not worry about the 1% of things that simply are experiments

What are you purposefully doing to NOT achieve the thing that is so important to you?

It’s a purposely challenging question I ask myself and my clients a lot when we're not seeing the results we want in life

Because so often in life we have things we want to achieve, things we want to be different. And often we KNOW exactly what we need to be doing to get there.

Yet we don’t do it. And nothing changes. And this can go on for years sometimes.

Because we all experience something called a knowing vs doing gap. And even though we consciously know what we should be doing to get the outcomes we want, we often slip back into our subconscious thinking that then drives our choices, our behaviours, and therefore our results.

And it’s the reason simply giving ourselves something new to do on our 'to do list' simply won't cut it. Especially if it's something that has fear or negative beliefs attached to it.

So the next time you notice you are not getting the results you want in an area of your life, spend some time thinking about this question

‘⚡What am I purposefully doing to not achieve the thing that is so important to me?’

⚡Bringing awareness to this will then begin to help you figure out exactly what’s getting in your way and what choices you are making every day that might be limiting you

There were times in my career I was working 80 hour weeks and on the edge of burn-out ( if not there!)

And now, I work with so many women who come to me struggling to balance success with their personal life. Who often compromise, sacrifice and feel burnt-out.

We work on boundaries, on delegation, on priorities ( all of which are very important)...

BUT that is not the big thing that shifts behaviour and results in the long-term.

Because often many of us are still holding onto our past paradigms and beliefs about how we need to operate in our careers to be successful in order to PROVE ourselves and demonstrate our WORTH.

So, to truly create change, we have to rewire our beliefs about how we need to operate in our career.

We have to move on from old ideas and behaviours that helped us achieve success….and replace those with a new narrative.

We need to learn to understand and be secure in our own VALUE and WORTH, so that we learn to operate in a different way, enjoying the journey and our seat at the table. And indeed creating new rules for the table.

So I would love to invite you to ask yourself:
⚡What beliefs and old paradigms about what you need to do to be successful might you be carrying?
⚡ And how might this change when you start to really think about owning your value and worth ?

Many women I speak to say there is STILL a real lack of information in some businesses on how to truly advance into the top leadership positions.

Too many businesses also still reserve the top leadership development for an elite group ( despite a clear need for this from trainee all the way through to Exec and especially around return to work)

This is clearly on businesses and leaders to transform but here's some simple questions we can be asking to ensure we are taking control of our careers and pushing the agenda :

⚡Can you share structured information on exactly how I advance to leadership and how you plan to support me in it ?

⚡What leadership programmes have you created for women from entry level through to exec level and how do I access them?

⚡What 1:1 Coaching growth programmes can I access now across the business?

⚡What leadership and support systems do you have in place for my return to work after maternity?

⚡What organizational /system changes have been designed to ensure flexible leadership experiences are available for women?

⚡What senior sponsor, and networking programmes do you have in place for female aspiring leaders?

⚡How are you going to regularly ensure there is a process in place to ask what I want in my career?

⚡What stretch programmes and cross department responsibilities can I get involved with ?
