✨ Devonshire Cavern Trip – 10 Oct 2026 ✨

A huge shoutout to Will, who led his first ever caving trip and absolutely smashed it.

What started as a small plan for two quickly grew into a brilliant group of 11 cavers, from total newcomers to long‑standing members. After a slightly chaotic start with mixed meeting points, we regrouped and headed into Devonshire Cavern for a day of squeezes, crawls, geology chats, and plenty of laughter.

Andy, Dominika & Ian explored the Upper Series and put their fresh SRT skills to use, while the rest of us tackled the Lower Series — discovering natural wrigglers, enthusiastic navigators, and even a couple of brave souls squeezing through the upper entrance gate without even opening it!

We finished muddy, smiling, and celebrating with pints at the New Bath Hotel.

A fantastic trip, brilliantly led — and a great reminder that anyone in the club can organise something special. If you’ve ever thought about planning a trip, give it a go. We’ll support you all the way.

What a brilliant weekend of learning, ropework, and classic Dales caving!

After a solid day dialing in techniques on the SRT wall, it was time to take those skills underground!

One group tackled the classic pitches of Bull Pot, while the rest of the team ventured into Yordas Cave. Fantastic work from everyone, skills refined, confidence built, and plenty of laughs along the way. We also had a couple of members down F'ing Hopless Hole to check out the good stuff.

Massive thanks to our Training Officer Alice Emily and all the club mentors and trip leaders for giving up their time to teach and mentor! Where to next? 🕳️⚙️

Our final 3 Days in the Ardèche: Big drops, locked gates, sunny rivers, and cave photos! 🇫🇷

We’ve been making the absolute most of our time above and below ground. Here’s a look at what we got up to across our final three action-packed days:

The epic 4km Aven Despeysse to Grotte de Saint-Marcel through-trip! We completed it in 7 hours, but hit a locked exit gate at the end. Luckily, a faint phone signal saved us and the tourist cave staff gave us the exit code.

A rest day done right—hiking, canoeing, and swimming at the iconic Pont d'Arc 🚣‍♂️☀️

Finally, a relaxed 1.5-hour trip into Grotte du Prével for our final cave, taking our time to capture plenty of photos! 📸

Grotte Estevan & Grotte de la Barbette proved that size can be deceiving! 🇫🇷

​Lots of tight crawls, mega squeezes, and world-class speleothems! ✨ We had to improvise at the end when the final crawl proved a bit too snug for some of the team, leading to a quick turn-around and a successful entrance-to-exit connection from the outside (meaning a double through-trip for some! 😂).

✈ A week today is the start of our annual week long foreign trip. This year, we're heading to the Ardeche in France. 🆕️ New Members, New Eperiences!

Since January, we've had a steady rise in membership. Some have found us through our web and socials, and some have joined us following our Try Caving Days.

Today, we have 17 people underground near Matlock Bath. Some on a Try Caving Day, some new members, and some long standing members.

Here what one of our new members thought of one of their caving trips in South Wales last month.

🗣 Ahhh, where to go on a Bank Holiday Sunday? Snowdon? Mam Tor? Dovedale? Malham Cove?

Yes, that's right… there was only one place to be, exploring the Ogof Ffynnon Ddu!

While the other group headed towards the pitch to enter the Columns Chamber, our group (Brian, Tam, Tristan and Andy J) took a different route, traversing, climbing and squeezing our way through the passages to reach the chamber. Where we were greeted by the famous column formations that made every crawl, climb and squeeze worthwhile.

We were also lucky enough to get a tour from the wardens, who showed us some of the cave's hidden and unique features, including mud stalactites, Toberne rock and even some 1970s graffiti. We were also taught how to use backlighting to capture better photographs down in the cave. I hope you were taking notes, Brian!

After exploring the Columns and surrounding areas, we headed towards the Labyrinth. Thanks to Tam and Brian's impressive map-reading skills, we somehow managed to find our way out and make our way towards Arete Chamber.

From there, we headed towards the Wedding Cake and Gnome Passage before making our way back. We scrambled up another climb and headed towards the Mini Columns to finish off the trip before finally heading out.

So, after two days underground, what have we learnt?

We've learnt how mud and rock formations change within caves due to water levels…

And we've also learnt that Brian desperately needs to take a photography course.

🏔️ Bank Holiday Weekend in South Wales — Underground Adventures!

The club spent the bank holiday exploring one of the UK’s finest cave systems, Ogof Ffynnon Ddu, 37 miles long and 900 feet deep. We even squeezed in a trip to a quartzite mine to round things off. With nearly four inches of rain falling over the weekend, being underground turned out to be the perfect place to be (apart from it being far too wet to walk to the pub…).

Across four trips in two teams, we covered a huge amount of OFD 2, from classic passages like Gnome Passage, Speedy Caver, Salubrious and Shatter Pillar, to more technical sections including pitches, traverses and the Frozen River. Both seasoned members and first‑timers were treated to stunning formations throughout.
A real highlight was Sunday’s visit to The Columns, complete with a guided tour of Column Hall... a rare and memorable experience, made possible thanks to the wardens who generously shared their time and knowledge.

On Monday, the whole group headed to a quartzite mine near Dinas Rock, zig‑zagging through multiple levels, checking out mineral seams, old mining artefacts and taking plenty of photos of the flooded lower workings.

Between trips we enjoyed group meals, shared stories, compared muddy kit, and (for most!) managed a well‑earned visit to the pub.
A fantastic weekend underground with great company, challenging routes, and plenty of exploration. South Wales delivered once again.

🕳️ August Roundup

It’s been a busy and varied August for the club so far, with trips ranging from long-distance Dales classics to spontaneous local evenings (for those in the Dales), and explorations in rarely‑visited valleys.

Nidderdale – Goydon Pot
A long way from Lincoln, but always worth the journey. We spent five hours exploring Goydon Pot, enjoying its mix of passages, climbs, pitches, crawls and formations. Our two newly‑trained novices put their fresh skills to use and had a day they’ll definitely remember.

Leck Fell – Voldemort into Notts II Streamway
A last‑minute plan between Tam and Ciaran turned into a satisfying local trip, dropping into the Notts II streamway for a quick underground fix close.

Manifold Valley – Darfar Pot & Redhurst Swallet
With the heatwave drying up the stream beds, we headed to the quiet Manifold Valley for a rare chance to access caves normally guarded by water. Darfar Pot delivered nettle‑bashing, spiders and thick mud, while Redhurst Swallet offered dry sumps all the way to Sump 4. A great day exploring a new region.

Arkengarthdale – Danby Lead Mine & Maze Cave
Another long drive, this time to the peaceful Northern Dales. Danby lead mine led us into one of the area’s hypogenic maze caves, with tight crawls, climbs, mining artefacts, ladder pitches and natural passage. A brilliant day out in a beautiful valley... and one we’ll be returning to soon.

Continued Improvments at our Store
Having taken on a new store / club HQ in January, we've been busy completing some maintenance and kit inspections.

To wrap up August, 10 of us are heading to South Wales for the bank holiday weekend. Visiting the classics of OFD and Cwm Dwr.
