Talent matters. But mentality often decides what happens next. ⚽

Two players can have similar ability and react completely differently when the game gets tough.

One hides after a mistake.
One asks for the ball again.

One gets frustrated.
One resets.

One waits for the game to happen.
One tries to influence it.

That mindset isn’t something kids are simply born with either — it can be coached, encouraged and developed over time.

For me, one of the biggest jobs in grassroots football is helping young players become brave enough to make mistakes, resilient enough to recover from them, and confident enough to keep going.

This is the side of grassroots football nobody wants to see. ⚽

Shouting. Swearing. Intimidating coaches. Abusing officials. Losing control on the touchline.

And while the adults involved might forget about it by Monday morning, the kids watching won’t.

They see how we react.
They hear what we say.
They learn what we normalise.

Grassroots football should be a place where children can make mistakes, learn, compete, laugh and enjoy being part of a team — not somewhere they have to watch grown adults behaving worse than the players.

We can demand better without becoming part of the problem.

Respect the game.
Respect the coaches.
Respect the volunteers.
And above all, respect the kids.
