UCL Knights! ⚔️

We are very happy to announce the first set of indoor competitive trials!⛹️‍♂️

We will run 60 minute sessions with 20 people in each slot, with the first trial time being on Wed 29th Sep between 20:00 and 22:00. This means that we have a total of 40 slots available for this first sessions, with one trial running from 8-9pm, and the other from 9-10pm respectively. 🏀

In order to take part in the trials you are required to get a free ticket on Eventrbrite which you can do by following the links below:

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/mens-baketball-competitive-trials-2nd-slot-tickets-177440949657

Anyone who wishes to go trials will also need to have gotten the remote membership too which you can also get for free by following the link in our instagram linktree link. If you turn up without it, you will unfortunately not be able to join the activity. 📄

The ticket are free, and just a way for us to organise trials and keep track of the people showing up. The trials are for our 3 competitive teams, so if you are interested in playing competitively we suggest you come along! 🏆

Once you get a ticket you will need to show up 5 minutes before the time slot ready to play and wait outside the gym for us to let you in due to Covid restrictions. 🦠

As previously mentioned, if you can’t come do not get a ticket anyway because there will be someone else who may be available to come.

Finally, if you can't come or are unable to get a space (we get that it’s last minute) there will be other opportunities to try out. We will be running more trial sessions on the Saturdays of 2nd & 9th Oct - keep an eye out for announcements as tickets will be live for those by the end of this week! 🔔

Please get only one one ticket. We should have some balls for you to use, but if you guys can bring your basketball that would be great.

We can’t wait to see what you’ve got for us and for the new additions to the UCL Knights family! 💜

Nominations for our committee roles our now live.
If you would like to nominate yourselves, please follow this link: https://studentsunionucl.org/election/clubs-and-societies-term-1-by-election , type "basketball" into the search bar, and sign up to the role you are interested in. You really do not need to write too much about yourselves in your nominations - try to keep it short and sweet.
As previously mentioned this is a great way to get some work experience in a sport you are interested into your CV. Showing that your interest in basketball extends to a level of responsibility as a member of the committee or that you are more involved in the extracurricular community can be very useful to present your interests in future applications.
The available roles are described in the shared post, the list is also below:

Operations Manager
Kits Officer
Social Media Manager
Fixtures Manager
Activities Manager
Charity and Volunteering Manager
Sponsorships Officer
Virtual Events Manager
Social Secretary

The deadline to sign up is Midday Sunday 8th November !!

In order to nominate yourselves you should have been a member for 28 days - if you have not yet been a member for 28 days now you can request an exception to the 28 day rule by emailing [email protected] directly. Briefly outline which role you would like to run for, why you would like to run for the role, and why you were not able to purchase membership earlier. Considering COVID-19 and uncertainty in these times it should be easy for such exceptions to be made as we were unsure of what memberships members should get.

If you have any questions, feel free to comment them below! 😃
And lastly, best of luck during the upcoming lockdown for those of you in London - don't forget to (responsibly) stay fit and active at these times.

Hi guys, we are opening up some committee roles for those of you who want to get more involved with our club. Joining the committee will be very advantageous to those of you who wish to go up in the UCL basketball ranks in future years, as well as providing great experiences that really complete your time at uni. Being part of a student run club is very exciting as the opportunities for improvements and innovation are unrestricted and endless, so we can't wait to bring some of you on the particularly interesting journey we're on this year!!

The roles we are opening are:
Operations Manager
- will manage the essential elements to the operations of the club, such as venues when needed, task delegation, and communicating with captains.

Kits Officer
- will organise, design and order our various kits this year. He will collaborate with our Akuma and Nike contacts to make sure we have a great kit this year.

Social Media Manager
- manage and give life to our social medias this year to compete with other UCL clubs. He will also be a vital part of the committee, and will have our help to organise social medias when needed.

Fixtures Manager
- organise varsity, friendlies and finals against other universities.

Activities Manager
- organise fitness as well as other activities for the club.

Charity and Volunteering Manager
- manage existing and future partnerships with charities to help the club do its part to help those in need around the world.

Sponsorships Officer
- manage existing and future sponsorships for the club.

Virtual Events Manager
- organise innovative and fun virtual club events, particularly socials for our members.

Social Secretary
- will work alongside the virtual events manager until restrictions allow in person social events, at which point he will be the benefits of a UCL social secretary and organise in person social events.

Nominations and voting will take place through the student union website on the following dates:
* Nominations open: Midday Monday 2nd November
* Nominations close: Midday Sunday 8th November
* Voting opens: Midday Monday 9th November
* Voting closes: Midday Friday 13th November

We will soon release links for nominations and voting once available.

As you may notice, because of restrictions many of the roles will require less work than usual. At the end of the day we are all students, and studying comes first - although there are some responsibilities with the roles, work will never be tough - ultimately we're all here to have fun.

UCL Basketball fights through the Coronavirus pandemic!

15/10/2020

Basketball has been underfunded in Britain for years. At professional, university, and high school levels basketball clubs struggle to provide affordable and accessible opportunities to play the sport that we love. Basketball has been proven to be one of the most popular sports by participation. According to Statista, Rugby League had 62,000 participants playing it in the UK whereas Basketball had 280,000 participating in the UK - Rugby League was given 15 million pounds, basketball was given nothing. Similar inequalities are seen across British universities like our own, where basketball is yet to be recognised for its popularity or success.
This petition below, which has been circulating around the British Basketball Community, is our first step to reaching the recognition that our beloved sport deserves.

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/324801

Read it, sign it, and share it around, so that hopefully one day basketball will no longer be pushed aside and will be rightfully funded and supported according to its popularity in the UK. 🏀

Hey everyone!

A short heads up on the newly announced covid-19 restrictions. We don't know how or if these restrictions will affect our activities.

We'll let you know as soon as possible. And we'll also inform you of any changes before our second session of try-outs this Saturday.

Stay safe and follow the government's guidelines!
